In the 1st pic you will see the FL-400S has only 4 bypass holes.
In the 2nd pic you will see the FL-400S has 8 bypass holes.
When did this happen, and for what reason? Increased flow rate with 4 extra holes?
Also, why do MC oil filters have the raised bumps on the end cap?

Hey, that top pic is copyrighted!

Seriously I don't know about the holes, but I believe the "bumps" are how the thread end bypass is riveted into /onto the endcap.

Is that your pic KC? I found it on the interweb.

I believe the first FL-400s I ran had the 8 holes too. I chucked the last one without cutting it open though. I have a virgin cut open Mopar with 8 holes as well.

Hmmm. If the it is the same bypass in every way, I would much rather prefer 8 over 4. I can't see that being anything, but better.

Yes I posted that Motorcraft comparison here a few years back. But just kidding of course, anything you post on the web is gonna travel!

I would have to agree.
Now, if the 4 holes were elongated, then that would most likely make up for the additional 4 holes.
"FORD-MOTORCRAFT, are you reading this? I just gave you your next oil filter upgrade."

Did you check your PC for my DNA?

Some kind of spring loaded affair from the looks of it on the outside. I've inspected a few in hand, but never cut one open to see the guts. Someone should dissect the bypass valve is they have one laying around.

Mopar filters like the MO-899 show the internals in an exploded view without having to dissect one.

No idea on the raised bumps on the end cap.

Thanks for that Mopar graphic. Do you think that diagram of the MO-899 is for the currently available one, and are the ones at Walmart the same?

Well I'm not sure how to answer your questions precisely. The chart is something I found on the internet, I don't know the date for that chart. It has a bit better detail than the sides of the product boxes.

I've taken pics of the oldest (2012) and newest (2015) MO-899 in my stash. The exploded views on those boxes don't show any construction changes from what I can see. However both the "long" part number and UPC codes have changed

Here's the 2012 version, purchased last year on closeout at Menard's.

Box Front (Box Back is identical) - black background with white text at the bottom. Uses the word "Authentic" and lists 5 brands.

2012 Box Text Side - 'long' part number 1-04884899AB. Bold alphanumeric sequence MF1823. Stuttgart, Germany address near the bottom.

2012 Dome End with Date Code - April 27, 2012 Second Shift Line 7 (maybe)?

Here's the 2015 version, purchased at O'Reilly with a $5 off $5 or more coupon

2015 Box Front (& Back) - word "Genuine" used, grey background with black text at bottom, 10 brands listed

2015 Box Text Side - 'long' part number 0488 4899 AC-001. Bold alphanumeric sequence MF2B39. Torino, Italy address near the bottom.

Filter cases with different 'long' part numbers

Filter box bottoms with UPC codes - black background is 2012, gray background is 2015

Filter baseplate ends - no visible difference to me

I haven't purchased any MO-899 filters at Walmart but I wouldn't expect differences other than vintage as shown here.

Why are the 'long' part numbers and UPC codes different? I have no idea. But visually, including looking down the center tubes, the construction appears identical to me.

BOF,

FWIW, I looked through some BITOG threads and older threads with cut open MO-899 & MO-090 filters had 4 bypass holes, newer such threads show 8 bypass holes. Why & when? Not exactly sure.

What are the production code dates on the two MC FL-400S filters in your first post in this thread?
