My friend has a 2000 MB E320 Wagon with 54K miles on the 3.2L V6. He takes it to Jiffy Lube for oil and filter changes. The oil used is Mobil 1. His question is: What is the best filter to use? My question is: What weight M1 should he be using. I lean toward 10w30 summer and 5w30 winter. What OCI? The owner's manual suggests 10k?! This car is operated in the midlands of SC,ie, hot summers and mild winters.

Use one of the oils on this list

I'd use Knecht, Mahle, or Mann filters.

Your friend must hate his car it he takes it to IffyLube. 10,000 miles is no problem with one of the oils above. My choice would be one of the 5W-40 oils on that list. Mobil 1 5w30 or 10w30 are not adequate for that engine.

Actually, he is using one of the oils on that list. Mobil 1 0w40 syn. His question is: what OIL FILTER should he use? Remember, the OCI as rec. by MB is a long 10k.

There are two designs available from the dealer -- an original paper filter and a fleece filter. The fleece filter holds more contaminants and is designed for extended OCIs (as when you use synthetic oil). The paper filter should be used with regular oil.

Per the above link, Mercedes recommends that oils go into the 40W range.

I recommend Mobil 1 5W-40 winter, 10W-40 summer, fleece filter, and 10K OCI. There's a lot of following among MB owners to move from 0W-40 to 5W-40.
