I decided to make a post about a stash of filters that I have for my Mazda 3 to do a comparison. I have used a variety of filters on the car. Some are clearly made better than others. Some get twisted (which probably isn't really a problem). My go to filter has always been the Wix 57203. It have considered it the best bang for the buck (currently $4.42 on RockAuto). I recently decided to purchase 10 Champ P960 filters from RockAuto with another order I made since they were closing them out at $1.39 per filter. I ended up getting half USA made Champs, and half Korean. Here is a pic of my current inventory:
Notice the two different Fram and Champ filters. The Fram and Champ near the center are identical filters, both made in the USA. The Fram and Champ on the far right are very similar builds, but the Fram is built in the USA, where the Champ is made in Korea.

The Fram Ultra and Wix XP both look very durable. Both have mesh backing (Fram is metallic, and Wix is plastic). i will plan on running them for two oil changes (I do 6M oil changes), so they will be run for a full year.

Next some close ups of the standard Wix, and identical Fram/Champ. The plastic end caps on the Fram/Champ are very similar to end caps I have seen on Motorcraft/Purolator filers for these cars, and also very similar to a Mobil 1 filter I used in the past. The Motorcraft/Purolator filter used felt on the end as a seal instead of the rubber shown on these filters. The nice even tight pleats, and rubber seal, have always made the Wix my preferred filter.

Next are some close ups of the other Fram and Champ:

Both seem like nice filters. I have seen a previously run Fram filter of these design twist when removed though. One thing I noticed with the Champ, is that the pleats are so tight that it may restrict the flow since the pleats are jammed together on the inside of the filter. Here is a closer look (no light visible through filter):

Now, compare that to the Wix (which has more pleats, but tighter folds). See the light?:

I will happily use any of these filters. For $1.39/filter, the Champs were a steal.

Great post - well done

Have you ever tried the Mahle filter for this application?

No problem! I have never tried the Mahle for my Mazda (assuming OX203DECO). In looking at pictures of that filter, it almost looks like the internals of the Champ E-Core filters (including the plastic internal cage). They look like nice filters. I do have Mahle cartridge filters for my Mercedes. They seem like high quality synthetic "fleece" filters that are equal in quality to the OEM filters from Mann. Completely different application though.

Couple thoughts. As noted, with a cartridge application can do a virgin comparison without having to waste a filter.

Also wondered which of the Fram and Champ cartridges were the current filters. Based on google search, seems the applications to the far right the newest.

Thanks for pics.

Good question. Based on the date codes on the Fram box, I would say it's the other way around. The one with the red rubber gasket has a date of 2013, and the other one has a date of 2012. I'm not sure how to decipher the date codes on the filters themselves:

Reading the date codes I read, 04/08/2016 for the top Champ right. And 04/07 2014 for Champ left top. Bottom right Fram day 331, 2016 Julian date. Difficult to make out date code on Champ lower left.

Add that to respective websites showing far right design as current. Until proven otherwise, stick to far right newest/current.

i think you are referring to the Fram (not Champ) on the lower left. 14193P is the code. The strange thing is the boxes indicate otherwise on the Frams. I also purchased a Fram filter years ago for this car (my records show it was installed in 2010), and it was very similar (if not identical) to the felt gasket design.

Yeah Fram. The middle Champ and Fram 'appear' identical in the pics. One way to tell is check out what the current Fram cartridge is sold at WM. In any case, not critical, just curious which is the current design.

The date code telling the exact manufacturing date is always on the filter.

The date on the box (year only) is just the copyright date of the text printed on the box and the box design/graphics, etc. If the last time the box was updated was 2014 then that's what's shown on the box. For example, there could be a filter made in March 2018 inside a box with a copyright date of 2014.

Yep, I understand that. It wouldn't make sense to me, however, if the newer filter ended up in an old version of the box, and vice versa. When I look at Fram's date code format, it seems to indicate that the felt gasket Fram filter was manufactured the 316th day of 2013 (1st shift) (box says 2012). The red one has a different code format - 14193P. It definitely can't be the 419th day of 2011! I guess it could be the 193rd day of 2014 (box says 2013). The shift is not indicated since the time is printed (13:42).

Yes, they are good filters (L321-14-302-9U). I purchased one for one change back in 2014. Nothing wrong with it, but they are priced almost double compared to the Wix filters. I thought the Wix ones were a better value overall. And, at 1.39 each, the Champs are hard to beat!

How much are the Mazda filters where you get them?

Around 8 bucks or so would be a good price if getting them in bulk. Most of the time they are around 10 bucks or more though.

It is the 193rd day of 2014. The first diget is not part of the date of manufacture. Only the 2nd thru 5th digets are.

I guess this confirms that in the case of Fram, they switched from the felt end filter to the red rubber ended filter back around 2013-2014. Between 2014 and 2016, Champ switched from the Red ended filter to the Korean made model. Since I don't have a newer version of the Fram, I can't confirm if they changed to the Korean made one like Champ did. Pictures from Walmart seems to indicate they did: https://www.walmart.com/ip/FRAM-Extra-Guard-Oil-Filter-CH9641/16878967. So, for 1.39 each, I got a bunch of Frams with Champ branding - I will take it.
