Wix Filters vs. The Rest

Ever since I began using Wix oil filters, I have noticed that almost no oil drains out of the filter upon removal. For horizontally mounted filters, I find it to be very odd that almost no oil drains out of the filter.

On every other brand of filter (Fram, Purolator, Champs), a ton of oil usually drains out.

Are you supposed to have oil drain out of the filter upon removal? If no, what does that mean?

From my experience with the F-150 4.9L, I find that the Wix does a better job of retaining the oil. It's probably due to their quality ADBV. I generally use Motorcraft filters, but occasionally use Wix. The 4.9L has the horizontal oil filter. My old LTD 2.3L was the same way. The Wix filters seemed to make the least mess when changing.

When I had the LTD, Delcos were the worst for messes (they seemed to have a very stiff ADBV), but were the best price available. The Wix 51515 was a much less messy change. It was even noticeable in the weight of the filter (i.e. full of oil) after removal.

That's odd. The two NAPA (wix) filters I used on my cavalier were completely full of oil when I pulled them off.

I thought that's what I said.

The Wix filters seemed to keep the most oil within them. Motorcraft isn't bad. The Delcos from years ago had ADBVs that looked like a stiff piece of tire, and they would lose a lot of oil once taken off.

Everyone should mention their filter orientation and height on the block when commenting. My semi-horizontal orientation in the wife's jeep always has some oil in it, but shows some start up rattle. It may be draining forward or backward ..but once it breaks the siphon, that's what's left. It's enough (the center stud being the point of "level") that it spills plenty.
