They haven't revealed WHICH car it will be in...
I hope it will be the 6 too...because the 6 is a strong candidate for my wife's next car, but IDK how much experience and know-how Mazda has with diesel technology...

So...we still might go with the 2.5 SkyActive G (IF we get a 6), but I am generally excited about Mazda's SkyActive-D

Mazda's SkyActive-D

For 'Common rail direct injection' since about 2002

Do they still have the oil dillution issues?

And how much more is it? I *really* like the CX-5 - small SUV, manual trans ... but I vowed to never buy another new vehicle.

Wonder if they will sell it with a 6 speed manual.

The Mazda5? That would be nice... Although I'm happy that it's actually coming stateside at all!

That's the million dollar question. Big issues with oil dilution with these engines in Australia - changing oil less than every 2000 km! (source)... "Rising oil levels are something which can be attributed to normal operation of a modern diesel engine. There can be a slight dilution of oil levels and that’s completely normal," Mazda Australia public relations manager Steve Maciver says. Utter bollocks!

The 5 has been stateside since 2006, albeit with a completely conventional 4 cylinder petrol engine. Ours has the refreshed 2.5 liter and a 6-speed manual transmission. It's nice!

Yeah, unfortunately the potential cost savings are wiped out by the current cost of diesel vs. gas. Especially when the gas motor can deliver 40 mpg like the SkyActiv 3 is supposed to.

Will the gas motor deliver 40mpg? I don't want to be snide nor do any one up-manship; but my VW was able to deliver mid 40's with a heavy right foot for years. And under the new EPA reg's was rated at 43mpg (IIRC) no less. But when I drive my wife's Camry with the same right foot, it gets well under EPA highway.

I agree, both fuel types are starting to converge in terms of mpg, and so it's no longer a case of diesel being better. It's becoming a hard sell, what with the new emissions technology. But Hyundia just got bit (and hard) for a simple (perhaps intentional?) goof, one that was easily shown in real life by antedotal reports of low mpg. "Show me the beef!"

Plus, I'll believe it when I see it. Honda and Subaru have promised diesels for quite some time.

Well the 2.2 diesel will get more MPG and have TWICE the torque of the 2.0 gasser, so it would help out the CX-5 for sure (which is what was rumored to get the 2.2D first, but who knows).

During that review, they burned 6.1L/100km (~38.5mpg) and its rated for 5.7L/100km (41mpg).
Its likely the 2.2D will be a higher end model and will not provide economy benefits vs the base FWD 6spd manual 2.0L for total operating costs. BUT you get 40mpg and AWD (hopefully a choice of MTX/ATX too). If they could do that for $25k, I'd be tempted, but likely to be over $30k, I imagine.

Even 38.5 mpg combined is very impressive, especially so if they tested the AWD model. For reference the gasser is rated 29/28 mpg combined (FWD/AWD).

Edit: comparing costs, assuming $4.15/gal for diesel and $3.80/gal for gasoline (typical in my neck of the woods), the diesel is $0.108/mi while the gasser is $0.131/mi.
