The Active-X was rumored to be released in 2017 then 2018 then 2019... And suddenly, they announce a diesel platform in the CX-5 available now and upcoming the Mazda6. I'm just not going to hold by breath anymore for the active-X.

Mazda's diesel has been in Europe and Asia since 2012. It's been through a few upgrades already and yes, I believe it's performing well. When they release it in the USA, I wonder how many people are going to fill it up with gasoline? That will void the warranty -real quick.

Rustproofing... The Mazda's from the 70's and 80's were terrible. In my 3 Mazda's (all since 2007), I have not had any real problems with that. My wife's 2007 has surface rust on some of the under-carriage components but, it's of no consequence to practical longevity as far as I can tell. It's 12 years old and we have a lot of salt in the winters here. The amount of under-carriage rust seems no different than my Toyota vehicles. Since I really like my 2018 Mazda3, maybe I'll do an aftermarket rust treatment of the under-carriage. That's fairly common to do in this area because of winter road salt.

Are the Mazda's having rust problems in your area?

If I remember correctly, Mazda was forced to add E-dip dunk bath during the manufacturing process when Sumitomo loaned them money. But the process
wasn't added to every Mazda until 2014.
 
Why bring out a diesel with the current premium for diesel engine, diesel fuel, the complex chemical treatment for the exhaust and advances in gas engine technology?

And next year all ships will be required to operate on low sulfur diesel rather than bunker fuel, so demand is going way up and the price of diesel with it. Look out.
 
I was thinking along similar lines.

When diesel had lesser emissions requirements and the fuel was cheaper than gasoline, it made sense. Of course, I had a 1981 VW Rabbit Diesel.

In 2019, it's hard to make the economics work with the higher fuel prices, and even more costly emissions controls added to the mix.

You have to WANT a diesel in North America as it seldom makes economic sense for passenger cars.

They didn't give up on it. The engine is slowly being made available. It should be in the US later this year.

Why? Same reason ships want them - higher thermal efficiency. If this new one gets 50 mpg, the cost delta could be worthwhile.

Hey Ray, yes big time, I cant speak to the 2014 and up models but everything prior to that is problem. The rear quarters on the 6 are horrific, it starts out on the dog leg and spreads like wildfire up in to the wheel well area and beyond, other models have similar problems in other areas.
Its a shame really, the engines and drive train seem to be good, they ride well and are comfortable. I think if you own it from new and invest in high quality rustproofing the issue can be for the the most part prevented.

My friend's 2010 Mazda 3 is starting to rust in weird places, like lots of small rust spots on the hatch. Oil sprayed every year since new (original owner) which protects any car that does not have corrosion issues. Newer models might be better but old ones cannot handle rust belt DD duty, even with annual oil spraying.

If one wants low operating costs in a car, a gas hybrid would be cheaper to buy and maintain and would use a cheaper fuel as well.
Most HEVs can do at least 50 mpg under favorable conditions.

They are difficult to rustproof, it takes a long time to do right and unfortunately you need to drill a few holes inside to gain access to a lot of places with a long wand.
Its not a bad thing, you can pop the plugs and do it again in couple of years. You need to almost flood these areas because any spot you miss or is light will rust, its about a 5- 6 hour job.
The products that really work are quite pricey as is the equipment.

Two entirely different engine designs.
Mazda is about to release the SkyActiv-X engines in Europe, and will roll it out into other countries as the need arises.

You know, exactly how they are doing/did things with their SkyActiv-D engine line.

Not sure how you think they "gave up" on the SkyActiv-X engine.

Mazda has been saying it was going to release a diesel Mazda 6 and diesel CX-5 for quite a few years, and because of the VW and Chrysler nonsense, it got pushed back, and pushed back, and pushed back yet more.

In fact, they have to release these Mazda 6 and CX-5 diesels now, because one of their upcoming Inline 6 engines is also going to be a diesel.
So, they want to get Mazda buyers used to buying top trim vehicles equipped with the diesel, so that when the Inline 6 Large Platform vehicle shows up with a diesel in it, Mazda buyers won't hesitate to buy the car.

Also, the other Inline 6 engine is going to be a SkyActiv-X engine, so they obviously aren't giving up on anything.

You seem to have forgotten the fact that that era of Mazda 6 was built by Ford in Michigan at the Flat Rock Plant.
Feel free to throw some of the blame on Ford for the Mazda 6 rust issues you are seeing.

while "low Sulfur" diesel is hardly low sulfur content ... 5000ppm content
it is 7 times better than the current 3.5% standard

but a long way from that 15ppm diesel that is used on highways.

This is correct.

In my own opinion, I am not sure why Mazda continued with the diesel? There were delays and new regulatory hoops they had to jump through. The Volkswagen debacle really screwed the pooch on Diesel engines and as Mazda continued to work on it the regulation and requirement goalposts were being moved. That's why it took all this time.

I might be wrong here but I read that Mazda is expecting 20-30% of sales to be for the diesel. I think that is too optimistic and think it will be far less than 10% for the US market.

Meanwhile, SkyActiv X produced diesel power and torque with gasoline efficiency. That should be their real focus here.

Did they make the 3 also? They are just as bad all the way back to when they were known as the GLC. Fords are well known rust buckets, no news there.
