Here is the latest UOA for my Mazda CX-50 2.5S (N/A 2.5L). Please enjoy the information overload.

The oil was in use from Dec 24th 2023 to July 24th 2024. Over that time I covered 9771 miles, which included approximately 4400 miles in road trips. Otherwise the this is our run around vehicle, so gets a good mix of driving including some short trip along side some longer trips. According to the computer, this run had 255 hours on it with 26 of them being idle hours. 355 gallons of gasoline were consumed with an average MPG of 27.6 with an average speed of 38.3mph. Highest MPG was 32.5 and the lowest was 22.5. The average engine power output per hour of use was 18hp (3438kWh or 4607hp-hr). The OLM was showing 600 miles remaining at the time of the change but was showing that with every restart for about 300 miles, so I would have expected to be going to zero at about 10000 miles.

The oil used was Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 with a Mazda filter, 1WPE-14-302 and was replaced with the same thing. A little bit of oil was consumed over the OCI, but it was probably in the range of 1/8-1/16 of a qt, so nothing to be concerned with. The max engine oil temperature I saw was in the 215-220 range when driving through the Mountains of West Virginia in 90+ degree heat. In most other driving situations, the 2.5L Skyactiv engine doesn’t appear to get its engine oil all that hot. When the ambient temperature is in the 60s, the engine oil temperature might not even reach 180 degrees with an 1 hour of driving at highway speed.

Now on to my thoughts about the UOA. I think the Pennzoil held up much better than the oil the Mazda dealership used. Wear metals are stabilizing and the final break-in metals, Cooper mostly, appear to be out of the system. The oil appears to have held up well, viscosity is still in the correct range, although down a little bit from PP 0W-20 starting point. TBN appears to have held up at 2.2, when the starting point is 4.8. Oxidation at 11 is only 5 points above Platinum’s starting point of 6. Although I couldn’t find a starting point for the Nitration value of PP 0W-20, I’m assuming it probably similar to the PPHM 5W-30, which had a starting nitration value of 5, so mine would be about 5 points above that. All acceptable in my book. Fuel dilution at 2.5% is acceptable level to me. I do think it’s probably is quite hard to get fuel dilution much lower then that given the N/A Skyactiv engine oil appears to be quite slow to warm up.

I took this oil sample after driving home from work. When I checked my oil temperature, it was 192 degrees after I had been driving for about 1.5hr as traffic was horrific that day. Hope you enjoyed this ramble, let me know your thoughts.

I’m planning on following the OLM for the next change after seeing this. Although, I don’t anticipate this OCI having 4400 miles of road trips. So, the next oil change will probably be Spring 2025.
Service Number #3 UOA.webp

Per Mazda, the a completely dry fill for this engine is like 5.8qts and a regular oil change is 4.8qts. But I was a little under 5.5qts to get it to the top hole on the dipstick. For this UOA, I had only put in 5qts since that was all I had on hand, that put the oil level in the middle of the dipstick. When I drained it, it was right about 5qts out.

I was able to pull engine hours including idle hours using a OBDLink MX+ dongle and the OBD Fusion app.

Thanks. I need to get a MX+. Do u plug it into the OBD port 24/7? Where did u buy it from?

Averaging less than 2ppm Fe in such a young engine is quite good. The other metals are coming down and likely to be at noise levels by the next OCI.
The fuel contamination doesn't seem to affect wear; typical of most UOAs. The soot/insolubles are nicely low, also.

This seems to be a good engine; take care of it and it'll last a long time.

That's a pretty typical result for a new engine. My wife has a CX-5 and I changed the oil at 500, 1000, and 5000 miles. It's due for the 10k oil change in a few days. I'll send off a UOA to get a base line for future samples.
My wifes 2024 CX-5 had an oil change at 2300, 6300 and just changed it last weekend at 10,059 miles. First 2 oil changes were Castrol Edge 0W-20 and the one last weekend was Quaker State Ultimate Protection 0W-20. Next two oil changes after this one will be the same oil in this UOA. PP 0W-20. Got two jugs for the rebate ($25.) Already received rebate also. Used it for an Amazon gift card that my son got hold of to get new battery packs for his Xbox controllers! LOL

My plan is to run the QSUP to 15K, then do an oil sample.

Thanks to OP for providing this report. Looks great!

Updated Note: I change the oil on ramps. I let it drain until it stops, no drips. I dump in the whole 5 quart jug. Start engine. Check for leaks. Put access cover back on. Back off of ramps. Let idle for a few minutes. Shut it down. Wait 15 minutes. Check oil. Always just above half way between two holes on dip stick. Add .2 quarts and that takes it right to full hole. So, 5.2 quarts. This was with the OEM Mazda Japan Roki filter. Last oil change was a PG4612, but didn't seem to change amount of oil needed.

I am quite impressed with the wear rate of this engine so far, and I don't really baby it. Driving around in the hills of Pittsburgh take some high power and RPMs at times.

I had a similar oil change procedure, I let it drain on ramps while I changed the air filter and cabin air filter. Nothing was dripping when I put the plug back in. It took somewhere between 5.3-5.5 quarts to get to the full dot on the dipstick for me, I was measuring out of a 5qt jug so its not super accurate, but close enough.

Same, I'm just estimating around 5.2. Could be 5.3. Just pouring out of a big jug, so not accurate at all.

I don't, but I could. When I have left it plugged in, I haven't had any
Wait. U collected all that engine data and the MX+ was not plugged-in continuously? When during the 9771mi oil change interval did u plug-in the MX+? I am trying to understand how the OBD dongle collects data. I read the specification. It does have a sleep mode and consumes 2milliamps.

The dongle doesn't collect it, the PCM collects and stores it. The dongle just gives me access to it.

Got it. Thanks
So how does the PCM or dongle separate subsequent oil change interval runs?

"This run had 255 hours on it with 26 of them being idle hours."

For example how do u reset these values for the next oil change run?
Maybe resetting the "oil maintenance" light resets to zero a bunch of PCM engine attributes.

The PCM doesn’t separate them, I just keep detailed notes in an excel sheet. It just give me the total engine run time and total idle run time and I make note of them when I change the oil. So I’m able to keep track of all this for my entertainment and the people here.

Great report! Low wear. You could try PUP 0-20. Slightly thicker and smoother in my Camry.
