I actually read somewhere that that's what they were going after.

Mom is looking to replace her 1996 Passat 4cyl. We're leaning toward a Jetta Sportwagen. Has the I-5 and disc brakes that the base Jetta doesn't, but with the hatch...steel wheels and no sunroof...$20k. Seems like a good car for the money. I told her not to worry about mpg, she doesn't drive much.

I wanted to bump this thread because I didn't find any others on the 2012 Passat. I took one of the demos out for a spin this weekend with the TDI. From my short test drive I think this is a great vehicle. Interior space of an Accord, great seats and driving ergonomics. 40 MPG on the sticker, but will probably do much better (45-48 if you believe the internet). An SE model with sunroof and DSG stickers at ~$28k give or take which is a great price compared to other mid-size sedans that don't return that mileage. The TDI has plenty of guts for this car though I'm sure after the new wears a little one would want more. I'm thinking this is my next car. Anyone have one that cares to bust the bubble?

I went to the dealer to look at one as well. Great interior, lots of room. But too much room-- this thing is humongous!

My dad recently picked up an '09 A4 with this engine and manual trans. He's always been a diesel hater, but he had trouble getting paid by one of his clients, so he took it in barter I think. Supposedly he likes it. I haven't personally driven it yet, so I can't really comment much.

In the US, people typically gripe about VW dealer service, so if you do end up buying a new one, make sure there is non-horrible dealer somewhere near you that you can go for warranty work.

Audi makes a A4 diesel in US??

While the styling is not revolutionary, it is still pleasant to the eye.

I think the push to make VW more affordable is going to be a successful approach for VAG. This way they make their VW products more affordable, especially in the current financial situation when everyone is watching what they spend. It also differentiates VW from Audi. It's not like what we see with Acura, Lexus or Ford where the same car is sold both in the lower end and upper end brands.

Some hardcore VW fans will be disappointed but that might be a short-term inconvenience.

I generally like what little I've seen of the new Passat. It would be good to see one offered with the 2.0T at some point. My '03 Passat was a terrific car and I could see buying a VW again, someday. American made is a big plus.

As to dealer experience, mine was pretty much limited to recall work, I'm trying to remember if anything ever broke on the car. All maintenance was done by me or independents.

targeting the jingoistic crowd... I wonder how many VW buyers fall in that category.
