It's been about 2 weeks now since Mazda botched up a simple valve cover gasket replacement. I was disappointed they even had to do it, but unfortunately in order to replace the OCV on the top left side of the engine, it has to come off. The OCV wasn't leaking bad and part of me wishes I had just let it go. The car has only 53,200 miles on it. Seals and gaskets are generally more time dependent.
They originally had the car for one day for the e-brake recall and OCV replacement. I got the car back and it smelled like oil coming through the vents as I had mentioned in the other post. They denied it was leaking and said it was likely from oil on the exhaust manifold. At first I bought into that idea as it's not that unreasonable to think that could have happened. After I cleaned the engine however, and took the car for a long highway drive, the oil smell became much worse.
I finally took it back to the dealer and showed the tech where it was leaking and he agreed and replaced it. They gave me some bs excuse and tried telling me it was a defective gasket. A more likely story is the guy rushed the job and did not properly put the RTV sealant in the proper area.
The second time around, they did it right. I possibly see some extremely small amount of oil shining possibly on one part, but only when you take a flashlight to it and shine it direclty on the seal area. That could be residual from the job and nothing at all. It's 98% dry all around. Critic made a good point and told me to let the car sit there a good 24 hours too. It was extremely humid they days they did the work.
If I keep this car long enough to where it leaks again, I'll do the job myself or use that Permatex Spray Sealant and call it a day.
