Hi and TiA. I am considering buying a used version of these cars. Any known issues with either? Things to look out for? Looking at 2020 and newer.

Head issues with the cylinder deactivation and oil leaking from timing cover on '22+. Drivetrain is solid.

2022+?

They had some issues with 2020 and previous years, but changed the cylinder heads to correct the issue. They did away with CD in 2021, I’m assuming this was to correct the issue, and it came back in 2022. All of the issues I’ve read about are on pre-2020 models.
Our 2024 CX50 has it and it seems fine. With that said, we are at 16k, so that’s not really a milestone to go by when longevity is concerned.
I agree with your statement about the drivetrain. I still say that Mazda is one of the few Manufacturers that I still have faith in when it comes to reliability and a solid drivetrain.

Ok so you like it over all? How do you rate the AC? I was reading some feel the AC has a tough time keeping the cab cool? I see you live in FL like me.....AC is a top priority for me. Thank you!

Go Turbo. It just fits the powerband much better. The black interior, like ALL black interiors, does get hotter, and makes an A/C work a bit harder, but I've had mine in the hot Arkansastan summer sun without issues as to keeping it cool. I have a 2024 Signature.

FWIW, I have had one engine replaced because of rod bearing failure at 85k. 15k miles later I'm sure the new engine has the same issue again but ofc is not "making that noise" when I bring it into the dealer. Now my warranty ended this past weekend so fingers crossed nothing will go wrong.

Well, I live in Arkansas, which is also quite humid in the summer. Yes, we are very pleased with the CX50, and the A/C doesn't have any problems keeping it nice and cool. While on our 12-day road trip throughout the Southwest last year, we were in Las Vegas when the temperatures reached 115-120, but the A/C was flawless.
Mazda punches above its weight when it comes to what you're getting for the price. That's my opinion. (y) 🍻

Ceramic tint on all glass surfaces lets even the most anemic AC work fine. I do all my cars, especially my EV's this way, and don't take much of a range hit at all in 100*f weather (maybe 5%?).

I would definitely agree on that. I only ceramic tinted the two front, as the rest of the car already had a tint to it. ( I wanted to keep the same shade all around).

I find the AC to be weaker than other vehicles. Its not a showstopper or anything, but its noticeable.

The air is plenty cold in the summer, but the blower or vent design could be improved.

As mentioned above, ceramic tint helps.

I see you're in FL, but rust could be an issue on as little as a 3-4yr/old Mazda if it lived any of it's life in the rust belt. I looked at several used, lease return 2021s in 2024 and saw lots of undercarriage rust and some small spots forming under the doors and rear hatch. Really loved the CX5 though.

Firm ride (fact);
seats can use more thigh support (IMO);
using xW30 oil really quiets the car and results in a smoother, silent engine at idle (subjective);

Had a 2014 6, a 2016 cx5 NA, a 2018 3 NA, and currently have a 2021 CX5 turbo, and a 2025 CX30 NA. All have been bullet proof with no major issues. I just took a 4500 mile road trip with the cx30. Denver to Dallas to Clearwater Florida.Back roads thru Georgia up to Milledgeville, Madison, Atlanta, then over to Tuscaloosa, AL, across Miss. to the Natchez Trace and down to Vicksburg, back to Dallas and a long return via mostly 2 laners to Denver. Great road car. Comfy for two with lots of stuff. Some wind noise thru side windows. Adequate power for passing. Great Mazda handling. Regularly got 35 to 36 mpg per tankful.

Now the bad...I absolutely hate (with a passion) the radar cruise control. It will read a barrier in the center of a divided highway on a curve as a stopped object and slam on the brakes. It will do the same thing going down a back road hill and read the bottom of the hill as an object and slow the car often dramatically. It will slowly approach a car in front of you and then when you pull out to pass it, it will mash the accelerator to resume the set speed. Nothing is gradual or smooth when using it. Fortunately it can be defeated by going thru 3 or 4 layers on the computer, but it must be reset every time the car is restarted. The cruise operates just fine and is very predictable with the radar feature turned off. I also dislike the accident braking avoidance feature as well. Basically it scares the snot out of you when you least expect or need it. It applies the brakes harshly and has to send drivers behind you up a tree. I feel I should be apologizing to them for something the car decided to do and not me. The one safety feature I do like is that Mazda's lane centering feature is almost non-existent. It lets you do the driving but will give the steering wheel a buzz/vibration and the slightest alignment nudge when you cross lane markers without using the turn indicator. I feel many of these so called safety and driving features are just not ready for prime time. The transmission is also programed to quickly upshift in high gears (for fuel economy?) but will also downshift quickly with the slightest pressure on the accelerator which can be annoying. None of my other Mazda's had this "touchy" of a transmission. All in all they are great "drivers" cars.
