Any known problems with this car, engine etc? Any other owners care to chime in on their experience?

I hope to finally get the wife out of her minivan. This will be her DD and our touring car, so I am especially interested in this as a long range driver. Probably aiming for 2WD Touring version.

Drive it and you will fall in love. The steering feel and handling are exceptional for such a large vehicle. The 3.7l V6 is Ford designed and is a great runner. FWIW--Oldtommy

I have nothing but great experiences with my Mazda6...totally different vehicle but build quality has been top notch so far and I have close to 20k on it.

Go for a test drive!

Comparable to most other seven seaters out there (MDX, Highlander (not the hybrid), Tribeca, the GM triplets etc) which all seem to be about 18 or 19 mpg combined.

Funny you should ask this, as I am looking for a three seater to replace my RX. The son of a neighbour of a friend of mine (lol..really) is currently apprenticing at a Mazda dealership here in Ontario and I asked him to ask the kid about the CX9.

Here is what he said - "Talked to the Mazda kid, generally OK, a little thirsty (what 7 pass. SUV isn't?). 07 and 08 had wheel bearing issues and rear shock issues. 3.7 was of Japanese origin and pretty decent"

If you are expecting something that drives like a truck, you're probably not going to be pleased.

I have the smallest version of that chassis. I'm more than pleased.

Mazda and Subaru have more 'character' than all other Japanese cars.

Good choice - although I am not a big SUV/Crossover fan, I have always thought the CX Mazdas look very good for that segment.

Isn't there a smaller CX? CX-7 I think? is that too small for your needs?
I wonder going with the smaller loaded CX7 would be a better financial option than an entry level CX9

My 09 CX-9 has 50K on it and 0 problems except front rotors and pads at 30K
suggest you get a backup camera option
I get about 21mpg on long highway trips at 75ish mph
I love this vehicle

Thanks for the direct experience, PWolf. I test drove one today and it drives beautifully. Seats are very comfortable. We are getting sucked into the high end GT but isn't that what car fever is all about? The only downside I can see with this vehicle is gas mileage but its tough to do better with 4400 lbs; 276 hp and AWD. We got a pretty good offer on a 2011 demo with 5,000 miles. Plus, Mazda has an additional $1,000 factory to dealer on 2011s plus $500 Mazda loyalty if you own another one. So, their first offer on a $39,500 MSRP was $31,580. Not bad and there's definitely more give there. Note: they will not give 0.0% with this deal?

Also, I checked the owner's manual for the oil recommendation (natch) and it is 5W-20 for the 2011. I wonder if it's any different for the 2012?
