I am looking to change the power steering fluid and transmission fluid in my 2013 CX-9 (FWD).
The owner's manual calls for "Mazda Genuine JWS3309" for the transmission and "Mazda Genuine ATF M-III, M-V or equivalent" for the power steering.

I checked with the dealership first and got the "transmission fluid is not serviceable" response because they couldn't just tell me the price of the fluid without my vehicle information.
I went to O'Reilly's and got 3 head scratches and a final "any ATF should work"

Would I be ok just buying Valvoline Maxlife Multi-Vehicle (red bottles) and using it for both the transmission and power steering?
Or is there a better solution? This is absolutely worse than picking motor oil.

Toyota Type-IV (T IV) is a 3309 fluid and readily available.

The substitute I used most was MaxLife Dex/Merc LV. The LV has to be in the name.
The vehicles I serviced with it were Saabs and Volvos.
Do you know what transmission is in your CX-9?

That mazda atf is also known as t-iv but the 6 speed is an aisin seiki awf21 which is a commonly used 6 speed in many other brands and it's the exact same thing as toyota t-iv which is also called toyota/lexus/gm jws3309 fluid as toyota owns a majority stake in aisin seiki. This pds to a t-iv/3309 only atf states it has a kv100 of 7.3 so maxlife might be a bit thin for it but maxlife has been used in that 6 speed with success.

As for the power steering pump you can likely use anything in it.

Like was stated, the transmission fluid is AWS3309 / T-IV trans fluid from Aisin Warner. The power steering fluid can either be Dex3/Mercon or M-V (not Mercon V per Mazda) which is the old FNR5 fluid, which in Ford land updates to Mercon V.

I'm guessing Aisin Warner made the transmission, so the Aisin brand fluid would be just right. (and it's cheap on RockAuto)
