That would eliminate the cold start advantage of a high VI oil but not the high temperture advantage; i.e., a high VI oil doesn't thin out as much at extremely high temp's; hence greater over all protection.

That's why I say a VI as high as possible is the holy grail in terms of viscosity in a motor oil.

OP: you're in an enviable position. You've got the option of using an OEM synthetic designed expressly for your kind of car, pretty readily available and not that expensive. As if not enough, the Mazda 0w20 is by any account a formidable oil- sporting an extremely robust viscosity index as well as a very large slug of moly. Tough combo to beat. Wish my own cars had a custom-tailored oil to choose from, like that! No need to look elsewhere, in my opinion and perhaps others.
