Mavis tries to strike again

Every time I go to Mavis, they try to upsell something or rip me off in some way. Went the other day for two tires as I picked up a nail in one of the front tires. I was planning on replacing both fronts anyway, this just made it more urgent. My car was serviced in the first bay by the waiting area so I was able to keep an eye on the tech, at least on one side. Of course, they throw in a complimentary multipoint inspection while the car is there. As the service neared completion, the service manager tells me that the tech did notice that there was a lot of corrosion on the battery and it was a little low on the load test. For $200.00 they can take care of that for me with a new battery and have me on my way. "Weird" I responded. "Just last week, I cleaned those battery terminals and gave them a nice coating of Vaseline too!" "Let me check" says the service manager. He comes back moments later after conferring with the tech. "Sorry sir, tech got the cars mixed up. You are good to go."
I always wonder just how many unsuspecting or overly trusting people get ripped off every day by these type of places. I only go there because it's getting to be the only game in town, they have great hours and it's in walking distance from my house if I don't feel like waiting. I do hate to give my business, and money, to an operation that is content to steal from customers though.

I gave up on them years ago, for shoddy work and trying to upsell repairs that they were clueless about. Like trying to sell me "ball joints" for my 88 E-150 which has King Pins. LOL They were not happy campers when they had me go into the shop so the "tech" could show me the defective "ball joints." When I corrected him and stopped them from doing an alignment they were twisted. Sadly the four tires were already on or I would have stopped that too. I took it elsewhere for an alignment and was told the front end was perfect. LOL Go figure. I had checked the front end prior to tire replacement and knew it was fine. Oh and they hammered out and damaged four center caps on my aluminum wheels, which I made them pay for.

Had a state inspection performed at a Firestone store on my then 12 month old GMC Sierra. Tech manually left the headlights on for at least 30 minutes while he played “pocket pool” and chewing the fat with his buddies. Service writer came over and said “your battery failed the load test so you’re going to need a battery “. One year old truck under three year factory warranty? That was my answer. He turned and walked away.

I haven’t bought tires at a chain “ tire store “ in years. My local father/son tire store have competitive prices and will repair or replace tires on everything from a wheel barrow to heavy trucks to farm tractors and all applications in between. They don’t sell batteries, wiper blades, or oil changes and get you in and out quickly all the while exchanging lies and war stories and give you a cup of coffee to boot.

I'm sure there's some really great Mavis type shops out there in the wild, but you have to go into one knowing their mode of operation is upselling.

I've been lucky to not have to use one for a very long time. Last I recall was in about 1989, when I needed the cat-back exhaust replaced on my 1985 Ford EXP 5MT.

My local Mavis is a couple of years old and they're pretty good. The lady that runs the store is tough tough tough. She runs a tight ship. They have never tried to upsell me. She knows by name when I go in there. I don't go much anymore (I had to go a lot for our fleet vehicle) unless it is for tires, nails, etc. in my familys cars.

My local Mavis store seems to be a pretty good group of guys. They leave the air hose out at night so customers can get free air after hours and on a few occasions I've had tires that I couldn't get to seat the bead and they'd use their bazooka and seat them for me for no charge.

I can't say that they're any better or worse than any other local shop that does tires but honestly, I don't use them unless I am in a situation that I simply can't handle on my own. I'm at the stage of life where I don't trust my fellow man very much.

So…why do you keep going back?
Yep don’t go back to the poisoned well, no matter how good the water tastes. Or in this case the most powerful word in the world, “No” followed by a thank you works well. I use it often with people that love to tell stories and sell things, students and schemers. I have patience so I usually listen to their song and dance and nod attentively then end it.

The Local NTB here in New Hampshire just changed to Mavis after the epidemic. Too bad, we had good luck at NTB when we got new tires for the wife's '17 Crosstrek
Sumitomo HTR AS P02 at a very reasonable cost. Decent AS tires.

HTR as p02.webp

Yeah, the ones here in South Carolina are MAVIS now also. I went to our local NTB shop once. Was in a rush and fleet vehicle needed an oil change. They left the oil cap off. Discovered it when I got home as i got out of the car and saw it sitting in between the windshield wipers!!!!!!!!!

Called them and talked to the manager. Oil level was fine, and was changed, so I just spun the cap on and carrier on my way. Didn't go back though.

Down here in Florida, Mavis are called Tire Kingdom.

They are ok in terms of quality of work, I turn down all the upselling.

It was the continuous push from management to always go for the usually unnecessary (or often outright fraudulent) upsell, that convinced me to leave the consumer car repair business.
