Recent Experience At Discount Tire

Nope don't need any receipt as it's not that serious. I Never said you were lying - I just find it hard to believe that's all and I deal with them on a commercial basis and they would never do that for me and we spend a lot of money there. I could hardly see any damage in the photo.

Take No offense please.
In his defense, when they nicked up my brand new rims, I complained for a year and finally got them to comp the set of Conti DWS' that I had purchased from them in the first place.

I wonder if these are franchise businesses...

This is why I prefer local "mom & pops" shops when I can use them, but they are a dying breed. Luckily I have a local tire shop that still is and puts customers first; Harold's Tire. It has cars lined up in the lot every single day, all day. He's adding more bays to his 2nd location he's so busy; Been in business 43 years here. He still has time to come out and talk to you in the waiting room even though his hands an clothes are black from working in the shop with his employees. Ironically, DT just opened a shop about 5 miles away on the big shopping strip road in our town of 125,000 (Topeka KS), but this guy seems to be unaffected so far.

If any of you are ever traveling through here on I-70 and have a tire problem, don't go to WalMart, or Sam's, or DT; trust me and go to one of Harold's 2 shops and they'll take care of you: https://www.haroldstirellc.com/
They are. Back when I had my own business and I opened a wholesale account with Discount Tire Direct and asked if I could just get the wholesale price at the local store I was told essentially “the local store is actually your competition.”

That seems to be the case as I am researching - I just can't wait for a tire to be shipped to me when a customer needs it right away but for my own personal use and anyone willing to wait I think I'll check DTD. It seems, as a general observation of mine, that the quality of installation as well as prices have suffered at DT over the past few years. The pricing I can excuse because everything is more expensive now but the issues with bad mounting/damage to rims and bad balancing is not acceptable. The last 3 full sets of tires I purchased all had to go back for rebalancing as they were bad right from pulling out of the store. It's to the point now I have begun using a mom/pop shop nearby for all my mounts/rebalancing and TPMS installs and they are half the cost. I will continue to use DT where appropriate (certain tire needed or best price) but will be shopping around more whereas before all my business went there.

Is your good mom and pop shop anywhere around Houston?

Wow! I just read another post where a guy went to Walmart and they did the exact same thing. They offered to replace his wheels, but instead he said no and they gave him two free tires. So this problem must be fairly common in the tire industry these days. I wonder what happened to Common Sense and pride of ownership.!

Sloppy toolwork scratches...a mention on a survey....an offer to replace (slightly disingenuous) with clown shoes (my endearing term for aftermarket wheels)....an offer to replace all 4 tires...realization of said offer
This is not how posts on service quality have been trending.
I guess congrats.
Not all aftermarket wheels look bad. The Volk TE-37 in bronze look great as well as a number of bbs rims. Both are forged and usually lighter than oem.

My current go to for tire work is a "mom and pop" shop. They are highly regarded and do great work. They are a "first come, first serve" business and have long lines every day they are open. However, usually they get you in and out in about an hour.

I tried another "mom and pop" shop years ago, They managed to gouge all 4 of my wheels.
When Sears Auto was still in business, they destroyed a wheel repairing a punctured tire on a new car, then argued that the wheel was like that when it came in. They finally agreed to repair the wheel when the desk clerk said "It wasn't like that when they came in."
Had Costco severely gouge a couple of wheels on one of our vehicles years ago. Their solution was to tell us to take the wheels to be repaired, and return with the receipt. We did that, and they immediately cut a check for the full repair amount on the spot.
My friend had all of their wheels scratched by their Nissan dealer during a tire rotation. The dealer had my friend use the "wheel repair warranty" they bought when they bought the car to have all four wheels refinished. They still use the same dealer for service, but now tell them when they go in that they will be checking the condition of all wheels and there had better be no marks or scratches on them [for whatever that's worth.]

DT tried to scare me into buying new wheels when I was there in 2021 to have new tires put on.

The pitch is this;

Them: hey brah, these wheels look all worn out and possibly dangerous so we can't let you leave without new ones.

Me: no they're fine, just mount and balance tires and we're good.

Them; Let's see what we can do for you on a new set. How much could you contribute financially on a new set?

Me: Zero

Them: ok we'll go ahead and take care of them for you. Yeah see ummm your wheels are bad so we just can't let you out of here. It's a safety thing.

Me: if you want to give me free wheels, fine, put the old ones in the bed of my truck.

Them; sure no problem, I'll be about 45 min.

Bam, free wheels 🤦

My latest experience have me going to Walmart now. I had 4 tires and a spare installed at Walmart on Jan 09 with great results. It took them 3 tried to reseal my spare because of the corrosion on the al rim sitting under the Highlander. They charged me one installation work because the first 2x on the spare the guy didn't wire brush the rim.
My discount tire took 3 tried to reseal one slow leak(weekly leak) winter tire on my MDX. They charged me $35 per tire ($105 total) to reseal the other 3 slow leak (~every 3 weeks time) tires. The Honda Pilot rims are in great condition with no corrosion at all. The snow tires were installed by them in 2021. Their normal installation rate is only $22/tire. That's my dissatisfaction.....

Glad they took care of you. Costco told me to jump in a lake and denied any responsibility for damaging the wheels on my Focus ST, even though I took photos of the wheels in their parking lot before service. I escalated to corporate and the Better Business Bureau. Now I share my awful experience every chance I get!

I am having difficulty believing this story. For one they would not replace wheels with new, they would repair them. Secondly $1200 set of new tires for some wheel scratches? The are only responsible for the wheel damage and you can get wheels refinished and cleared for $100-150 a wheel..much cheaper. So if you declined wheels they would have stopped there. I had wheels damaged before at DT and they would not do anything.
Yeah I dont doubt that they satisfied the customer, but there is a bit more to this story. If for every scratch, they had to replace wheels or tires, they would either go out of business, or lose their liability insurance. Again, there is more to the story.

Anyways I left some feedback on the emailed survey I get after the service.
This is an understatement most likely.

@Nuclear_42 where was this exactly?

After every service you get a feedback survey email a few days later.

I like Discount tires in general but last week I sent my wife in to get a plug in a 8 month old Cooper tire ,which we bought there. First they tried to sell her a New tire ,Then one piece lug nuts and finally Wiper blades. She put me on the phone with the manager and all went well. No extra B.S.

The discount tire that I used once completely turned me off from ever using them again. Why it’s so highly regarded in here is beyond me.

In my experience the satisfaction with any service is entirely dependent on the ethics and competence of the individual performing the task. That goes for Discount Tire, or anywhere else.

I don’t disagree. I bought a set of defenders from there, they scratched my rims and the workers were about as unprofessional as I’ve ever seen. I got a nail in a sidewall and the tires were at 5/32 so i just bought new. I asked them to put the tires in the back of my suv and I was going to give them to my nephew for his derby car. They didn’t cover the tires in plastic and just threw them in the back of my wife’s car that at that time was only a few yrs old. I was magic erasing the interior for a day. They sat and watched an older lady fiddling with the air pump and I went out to help, it obvious they weren’t going to. This was in addition to it taking 3.5 hrs to install new tires.
