Santa brought me a 1e.35 Hydrostat for Christmas. Reading through the manual, they recommend Permatran 821XL for the hydraulics and the front.
After reading here and what I can find on the web, can I use a 15w-40? I've read too much and I'm confused. The Permatran doesn't seem to be anything special and is like a 10w-30 or 15w-40. Am I right?
Thanks!

I assume it is under warranty. Use the specified OE product while it is under warranty. When the warranty expires use whatever you want.

There is not special about the MF Permatran fluids that would make them a necessity for warranty compliance or wear concerns.
Don't use a traditional engine oil for the transmission and front drives; use a UTHF (universal tractor hydraulic fluid).
You can use any UTHF from a reputable source and it'll be just fine.
I have used the house brand of UTHF from RK for 15+ years in my Kubota tractors; never had a failure or performance issue.
