It is inevitable. As the years go by and the population steadily increases (US Census Bureau projections with today's and estimated future legal and illegal immigration rates put the USA as nearing one BILLION souls in a hundred years or so) fossil fuel usage will increase here and elsewhere while supplies will likely decline.

Before the wells go dry surely the ever-increasing cost will drive consimers away from the typical fossil fueled car.

So..... what will the average Joe and Jane and John Q. Public do to get around?

May require a vast increase in public transit availability.

One possible solution is visualized below.

Mass transit has been a roaring success in San Diego. The longest run from downtown to the east county has at least one person get on every trip. Because the trolley has been so successful and San Diego is choked with traffic they are building more trolley lines for hundreds of millions of dollars on each expansion. With San Diego in grid lock it is predicted that dozens of people will now ride the trolley so to solve the problem more trolley lines are needed. People will suddenly see the light and start riding the trolley. It is so well planned that you can park within 10 to 20 blocks of the station nearest your home, have a short brisk walk to the station and provide car parts and sound systems to the locals. They can learn their trade in a no pressure enviraonment because you will be gone all day. Then when you arrive at your destination you are probably only a couple of miles from your work place and since there will not be a bus or taxi available think of how healthy you will become riding the trolley. On the "ride the trolley to work day" promoted by the city and the trolley authority, the director that lived a half block from the La Mesa station and faces a 20 foot walk from the destination station at the trolley administration did not ride the trolley. Answer, it goes through a part of San Diego that outsiders would not normally travel through. It's okay to say others should ride the trolley but when it comes to setting an example the director is in training for higher political office. Yep, with a billion dollars in the trolley system they are into double diget ridership and expanding the rails. Us stupid citizens just don't know that we should be riding the rails. Because the trolley is on the honor system it's been a good way for people that can't afford a ticket to get out of the getto and see where the trolley takes them. They can get into neighborhoods that they would otherwise never have access to and it does not cost a dime. And people have been shot, stabbed and beaten to death or just plain robbed. But as they say they are working the bugs out of the system and security is an on going concern. They get concerned every time someone gets mugged. As soon as they get around to it they will implement something or other. They did arrest a gentleman that was riding the trolley with no ticket and a hugh color tv and speakers with frayed wires a screw driver and other tools in his pockets. The arrest was thrown out because the judge ruled that the police officer had no probable cause to stop this man. There was a big reaction to this story but there was a new story the next day and life goes on. I think it would be much safer riding a kitty trolley. You have a good idea.
 
They want to spend $100 million to start streetcars here in Columbus. 5000 riders a day, wooo-hooo! A dozen transit buses hold that much in a day, what a waste.

The subway line in Toronto has an average speed, during less busy times, of less than 30 km/h (19 mph). The latest line, built using modern technology, achieves an average speed of about 40 km/h (25 mph), at a cost of $259,000,000 per mile.

That's depressing. I hate the station stop at Kettner and Broadway because it's between me, Ash St. and the Manchester Grand Hyatt, where I have to deliver khrap to more often than not. Argh.

Reminds me of the animation things the Monty Python show used to specialize in.

Except theirs would probably have had the monorail cat eating the passengers, then burping. . . .

This after MGM/Bally's had a private monorail that ran for years between their properties with no major problems...for free.
