The manufacturer of the scooter (4 cycle) calls for a 15w-40. Using a 10w-40, motorcycle specific oil,or car, full syn, or syn blend, HM, or even a dino..... would meet or exceed the requirements? Thanks for your replies.

Good idea. Or Mobil Delvac or Rotella in the 15W-40 variety. All good oils.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. If a manufacturer of a engine design says a 15w-40 is the recommended oil to use (assuming that the current SM/MA (whatever the motorcycle designation is)ratings meet all the prior ratings) is the 10w part of the 10w-40, going to be any problem for the engine? Is the oil "too thin" at some point in the oils life inside the engine?. The 10w/15w part of the oil is the cold, start up side, of oil, so in my limited understanding... a 10w...this would be even better(?) (thinner on initial start up) and cause no problems... am I correct? Thanks

Why care when HDEO oils are the viscosity they spec, are very robust and inexpensive. I would use rotella 15w40 and forget about it.

Seriously - Rotella is a favorite of many motorcycle owners. Others prefer Chevron Delo or Mobil Delvac. These are moderately priced and provide excellent protection.

+1 on the Rotella. 15W-40 is listed in many motorcycle owners manuals as acceptable, if not the recommended oil. As others have mentioned it is a diesel/and often heavy duty mixed fleet oil. Moto engines (esp air cooled) have many of the same issues as diesels like localized hot spots and high temps. The VIIs are generally more shear stable in HDEOs. I personally like the Rotella and run it in all my 5 bikes, lawn mower. You get higher additive numbers as opposed to car oil. Plus the benefit of little or no moly----but that is now under debate since some VOAs of the new CJ4 5-40 Rotella synthetic showing some moly. The 15-40 Rotella is still near zero on the moly meter. Too bad the price has gone up so much. Used to be around $8 a gallon for years.

Any of the HDEOs would be my choice.

The performance per dollar ratio is so hard to beat, and there many, many UOAs to show that the big brand name HDEOs are capable!
