Which would you prefer in a truck? The new Tacoma will have a 6-speed manual option. I prefer stick in cars but not trucks. Just my opinion.

I have only owned two automatic's my entire life. I prefer a manual trans but the older I get the more I like an automatic. If you intend to buy a sports car or drive ultra agressively a manual trans is the way to go. If you are going to be simply comuteing to and from work 99% of the time, have a club left foot or tow occasionaly then an automatic is the way to go. I say this because life is short and should be as uncomplicated as possable. Most people that do not or have not driven commericialy are horrable at towing with a manual trans!

Automatics today are getting realy durable. The key is staying ahead of oxidation and not towing overdrive if the transmission precludes this.

I think that it should be against the law to even produce a sports car with an automatic transmission. Putting an automatic trans in a Corvette or any other sports car is like castrateing a champion breeding stallion!

Buster I'm over 50 and as long as my legs still work I'll use a manual tranny. Of course if I had to sit daily in bumper to bumper traffic of Route 80 in rush hour I would most likely change my mind quickly

. For convienence the auto tranny is great. But for fun and power you can't beat a manual tranny

autos cost more to buy. autos cost more to repair. autos are less reliable. autos get less gas mileage. you can't bump start with an auto. nobody adds syn oil to a stick to make it more reliable. don't need extra cooling with a stick. people who can't drive need an auto. 16 wheelers use real transmissions. I can replace a clutch but i can't rebuild a auto in my garage. people who drive sticks are more aware, on average better drivers.

Ever heard of the NV4500?

Eighteen-wheelers, and many fleets are now switching to two-pedal "automated mechanicals".

When i get my truck in a year and a half(a tacoma probably

), Ill be getting another manual. Now if I just could afford the tro supercharged version:)!!!!!!

stick transmissions are faster. autos are heavier. Autos shift to the gear it thinks i want. i can anticipate road conditions an select the gear for the job before i get their with a stick. an auto can only respond after. if autos are so good why are they making select shift autos.

In stock form a demanding driver may be unhappy with an auto, but in todays vehicles a little computer work can make the tranny much more driver friendly, besides if you know you are going to need a lower gear it is still quite possible to reach for the selector and pull it down a notch. The TC also acts as additional hydraulic torque multiplication which is nice for many conditions. In a truck I would go for an auto, but if I blow another auto in my modified car next will be a T56 the 6 speed stick from the Camaro and Viper, the fun factor of a stick in a quick car is hard to beat.

most of the time, i prefer a manual transmission., but there are instances where an auto is flat out better, so it depends on what you are going to do with the truck, and thats really the bottom line. any sort of rock crawling or 4 wheeling is an ideal situation for an auto.

my mum likes manual transmissions but one of her legs is getting pretty bad, she cant really clutch anymore, so she has to have an auto.

i like a manual transmission for bump starting in a truck, push starting in a car or motorbike, more fuel efficency, more control, less maintence, longer life, cheaper cost, less weight, easier to replace, cheaper to replace etc etc....

Yes, and it actually REQUIRES a synthetic lube (Castrol Syntorq), which goes directly against what you previously said.

Depends on your type of drving. In the city most of the time auto. hwy Go manual, they can tow more and are more durable than automatics. B

I agree with all of this except if you drive freeway traffic and it is stop & go buy auto. the hassle of driving stick isn't worth it.

I would go with the..........manual. My automatic is nice, but I feel lazy driving a automatic as opposed to a manual. I enjoyed the manual for the 18 years I owned my previous Yota p/u. Each has its pros and cons. Its easier talking on the phone for me with the auto even though I shouldn't while driving.

Its actually easier on my knees with a automatic since I would get tendenitis flare ups with a manual from those football related injuries.

Its a toss up!

Mostly a Coke/Pepsi debate: all personal preference.

I like a stick in cars (with a few exceptions, like Vettes) and an auto in full-size trucks. For smaller trucks, a stick for 4-cylinders. V6's I could go either way. The torquier the engine, the more likely I will lean toward an auto.

If you're going to tow, get the auto.

Thanks guys for all your opinions. My preferences fall in line with MikeR's. I've always liked Automatics in the trucks I've driven, which were all full size. I'll have to drive the Tacoma with the 6speed to see how it is.
