Manual or Automatic in a truck?

i like a manual transmission for bump starting in a truck, push starting in a car or motorbike, more fuel efficency, more control, less maintence, longer life, cheaper cost, less weight, easier to replace, cheaper to replace etc etc....

Are manual trans more reliable then automatics? I never hear anyone having problems with manual transmissions. My trans in the Ram is heavily computer controlled.

i have been driving my mum's car around lately as mine broke down.

let me say that i need to update my previous statements to include that i HATE automatic transmission. it is SO annoying that the transmission shifts too early or too late. it never shifts when I want it to. I try to adjust my throttle petal to make it shift when i want it to but it never works out right.
I love my manual transmission cars! i will never own an automatic now that i have driven one for a couple weeks. i use to just dislike auto's. now i downright hate them.

Been driving a stick since '77 and hope to be able to for many more years.

If you get an automatic, a shift kit to firm things up makes it a lot more fun to drive, at least it worked that way with my wife's '92 Aerostar. I must say the Aerostar made me feel like Cryptokid (previous post) until I put in the shift kit--still annoying at times, but a whole lot better.

The newer automatics that have manual shift mode give you more control. My wife's Acura automatic gives you nearly full control, short of letting you do anything destructive.

It's still a long ways from being a manual.

I bought a 71 Valiant with a Torqueflite. Traded it in 1981. Haven't bought another automatic or Chrysler product since. I hated that thing. Shifted very positively, like popping the clutch. Got a tank of Sohio regular one night. Every time a slug of water hit the carb, the engine quit, and would not restart without the starter.

Still, if I faced a lot of stop and go driving, I might give up and buy another, but never a Chrysler. The 2 speed PowerGlide in my 57 chevy was a much more workable device. Even the 4 speed Hydromatic in my 55 Nash was a much better box.

The way the new 6-speed in the Tacoma is designed, it will give it a sporty feel since there's no long stick to throw around like in most pickup trucks.
