Getting ready to do an oil change on my old Northstar Cadillac and bought an STP S3675XL but then looking thru my stash of filters I found this old Mann filterML 1010 that cross references to the car. I don't know how old it is but it has to be old and, well, can I use it?? It has been stored well and looks good (no rust) but the gasket feels a little hard. Pictures attached and thanks guys as always. If it's too old to use I can send it (and several others) to any member who wants them. My personal feeling is it's not worth running it if its more than a couple years old but I know its older.

Hard to say how old, as the date code could be interpreted a few different ways ... my guess would be the "151130" for Nov 30, 2015. Or the "113012" could be Nov 30, 2012. Is there a copyright date on the box? That might help narrow it down some.

As noted by @ZeeOSix, hard to pin down exact date. Several options with the numbers. You could try contacting Mann (M&H) for decode, though not sure about a response. I'd say if you're seeing no rust on baseplate (or center tube) as you state, that's a good sign for it's storage environment. Based on information given, I think I'd use it. I do think definitely older than a "couple years".

Edit. Just as added info, the topic "Mann" filter is in all likelihood a Purolator (Classic) L25288 by another name.

That is exactly my thoughts, it could be either or.

VW filters have on box: no expiration date.
Interesting! Thank you for that info

I just worry more about if the media is brittle and could cause issues. One hand says one it a short interval and the other hand says it isn't worth the risk.

Thank you for all the feedback!

I have decided to cut the filter open and see what it looks like - I think we have had other posts talking about older filters and if they are safe to use so by cutting this open I can provide some data to share so we all can know for sure rather then guess. I will also email MH and see if they can give me a date of manufacture. I really think this filter is probably 2015 because I built this shop in 2014 and the filter was for a 2000 Regal GS (3.8SC) that I think I got that car around 2015 and never used the filter. So we are looking at a good 11 yr old filter - a great data point!
