managing vista user access control

OK, Im tired of UAC. It annoys me. SO I have two issues that I need to resolve - I hope someone can help me to solve these issues.

First, on both my vista laptop and desktop, neither will ever obtain an IP address automatically, despite DHCP being enabled, etc. So vista will show that it is connected to the router, but it wont connect out. I have to go into the network and sharing center control panel, select "view status", then "diagnose", then it tries to figure out what is wrong, and I have to select for it to automatically get a new IP address. Both do this, and theyll do it on routers other than my linksys.

So, pertaining to #2, but another item, if I disable UAC, then my computer sems to get the IP address immediately without issue. Problem is, when I set the UAC to "silent", not disabled, just to automatically accept, then Vista considers UAC to be off, and every time that I restart my computer the security shield comes up, telling me I have a high risk, and it is because UAC is off.

It is super annoying. I should be able to stat up my computer and have an IP address. I shouldnt have to deal with UAC if I choose not to. Id love to have its underlying "protection" for big things, but it holds up even the simplest tasks sometimes.

So, any suggestions so that my computer ALWAYS gets an IP address when it starts - not just connects to the router and only allow "internal", intranet connections, and also so that Windows security Center does not pop up every startup.

Any help would be great.

So, regarding the IP address bit, this is what I have to do, every time...

Well, the shield thing is easy, just bring it up and then choose "Change the way Windows Notifies me" and then tell it NOT to notify you.

I turn off UAC, I find it more annoying than useful personally.

Well last time I couldnt get on the internet at all, even doingthe steps I showed above.

I disabled UAC - completely, via the MSCONFIG - tools option.

Now it never connects tothe internet. It sees my router, and is stopped there.

Nothing else. It just tells me that windows cannot resolve the problem, even when I tell it to automatically get a new IP address.

Same steps as before, now nothing works at all.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a router issue.

Is router setup correctly for DHCP? (i.e. address ranges, netmask etc.)

the router is all correct. We have two wireless computers and one wired computer all working perfectly. It is the wireless vista and wired vista that consistently dont work.

My vista laptop (wireless) completely will not connect at all anymore. Windows cant fix the problem. Its shot.

OK, so I did what it states here:

Which is per an MS knowledgebase article.

Turns out that it still does not work.

I can force it to work by going into the IPv4 TCP/IP settings, and under advanced, telling it that the defult gateway is 192.168.1.1 for my linksys router. Then it works nearly every time.

However my xp machines and my mac dont need any of this info.

Any thoughts? Do most folks tell their computers the default gateway? Ive never had to...

Nope. The default gateway info should be provided to your PC automatically by the DHCP server (your linksys router in this case).

If you're having a problem obtaining IP address via DHCP, you could just set a static IP (and mask and gateway), presuming you mainly use this PC with this particular router/location.

that's the problem - I travel a lot, and use wireless in a lot of hotels, etc.

SO Id rather not go the static route.

Then again, annoyances like this on part of Vista get me to the point where I may [censored] the notebook and get a macbook pro instead. I use a mac mini at home, and most of the stuff I use my laptop for is benign.

THere is no reason why I should have to hassle like this.

Traditionally, I NEVER use MSCONFIG, I find end users screw up their system with it more often than not. Under Users in Control Panel there is a link to UAC, which allows you to turn it off. This is the normal route to perform this task.

What other things do you have "modified" in msconfig, anything?

nope... just used that as a convenient means of messing with it. I can do it the correct route tonight, no big deal.

I'm not a vista expert.

However, knowing MS, maybe you would be better off deleting the hardware and letting it find it again, with a new configuration.

Knowing networking, it is possible that your machine has two network interfaces and is trying to do some sort of IP address sharing that is enabled (without your knowledge) on this box?

I could see where that might mess up a computer. It doesn't look for a router because it thinks IT'S the router.

No experience, other than just TCP/IP knowledge.

I'm sorry I have no solution for you, but I can tell you that I have had UAC turned off for nearly a full year and never have to go through any of that. So there must be a way. Have you asked on any other forums?

I turn my cable modem off when away from the PC for any extended amount of time, so the hard router is always talking to the PC's. But when I shut down or reboot it finds the router pretty quickly.

If you want me to check some settings or something, let me know.
