What is Ubiquiti doing to my work computer connection?

I have an ASUS RX-58 router (acting as a switch I guess), with a Ubiquiti cloud gateway ultra access point.

I use a VPN for my work computer so I can access everything I need to. However this seems to be the case whether vpn is connected or not (I can toggle).

I need to download files, let’s say 700-800MB. I try to download them over my wifi and Fios connection, which the Ubiquiti UCG says has a decent connection:

When I try to download, I get less than 1, up to maybe 40kb/s.

Disconnect from my wifi, pair with my work iPhone which has one bar of ATT 5G data, and it downloads at 1400kb/s!

So somehow it’s being throttled. My ASUS router is only bring used as a switch now as I understand it.

There are no rules set on the Ubiquiti that I know of. But it seems like it is throttling my connection severely.

None of my personal computers or devices have any issues over the same wifi. However, as an example, the speedtest on my phone is not claiming the speed that Ubiquiti is.

So what gives? Is some device of mine throttling when I don’t want it to? I never enabled qos or speed limits.

What do I do? It’s gotten so bad that using my work computer is almost impossible from home connected to my WiFi and vpn.

Is your work computer Microsoft Windows? Your wireless LAN card/NIC/Wi-Fi card could maybe need a driver update.

Sometimes with really modern/fast WiFi networks, WiFi 6/6E, some NICs could benefit from the latest drivers.

It is. I can’t control driver updates on it. This slowness has only occurred in the last few weeks….

Possibly is there a setting within the UniFi UCG for this particular client that has a bandwidth limit set? Maybe lookup this exact computer in your controller and look through the specific client details.

Just guessing if file is from work downloaded the VPN network for computers is dog slow. I am on 2nd corporate job(75k employees) and my home WiFi is 500Mbps/100 up while work maybe needs 40/40. It’s faster on phone however likely a different network setup and less devices on it.

They won't let you control Windows Updates, or driver updates, or both? The company I work for allows driver updates but controls Windows Updates. Even non-IT employees are allowed to updated drivers via Dell Command Update, but need to be an administrator to update via dell.com/support. Driver updates can make a huge difference in performance.

That was my first thing to check. No rules for the computer to limit bandwidth.

I can toggle the vpn on and off, and there are two vpn servers/locations to choose. While vpn may slow things to an extent, I don’t know that it’s the issue. Reason being, with vpn off, on my home 300mbps fiber network I still get maybe 40kb/s max, while if I immediately switch over to a tethered cell, vpn still off, it’s way faster to download.

Ok more data…

I plugged my work computer directly to the ASUS AP, via cable instead of wifi.

I went to download the same file, and it’s coming in at 1100KB/s. Ubiquiti is claiming a decent connection:

10.8Mb I guess is around 1100kB (?). Factor of 8, right?

So tethering an iPhone on 5G over the computer’s WiFi gets about those speeds. Hardwiring to my 300/300 fiber optic gets good speeds.

Connecting my work computer to wifi gets poorer speeds.

Running a speedtest on my personal cell connected to the same wifi AP gives poorer speeds.

There is no setting that I see that throttles or limits speed. I don’t have QOS enabled. Even if I did, there are no other big data consumers downloading when I’m trying to.

Any thoughts??

Go to:

CMD

powershell disable-netadapterrsc -name Wi-Fi

Restart PC, try again.

EDIT: It's an issue with Receive Segment Coalescing and VPNs on Win10/11.

Thanks. Will look into that and if my computer will let me run that command.

This happens without the vpn enabled too. Does that change things?

Nope it won't change things but you'll need admin privileges to run the command. Almost all my users have the same issue if they use the IPSEC VPN. It'll continue during the VPN session and afterwards even if you exit out of the session, unless you restart the laptop or disable the RSC on wifi.

What is your setup?
The CGU doesnt include a WAP so What is your wireless access point?
how is it setup? Can you spare a few lines to descriptively describe your home network setup.
is it possible you are double NAT'ing ?

If your RX-58 is being used as a switch it is not the WAP? and you aren't using the WAN port.. just LAN ports?

My guess would be some VPN oddness since your other devices arent affected.. but fill us in on your setup for better answers.

I have:

Fios ONT
Ethernet from ONT to CGU
Short patch from CGU to AX-58 acting as an AP
Connected devices both wired and wireless

Pretty simple.

My first thought was vpn oddity. But since I can toggle the vpn on and off, and had the same issue with it off, it tells me it is something else.

Toggling it on and off doesn't remove the VPN driver
Is your ax58 plugged in with wan or lan port?

If you remove the AX-58 and test hard wired right from the CGU, what speeds do you get?

@JHZR2 any updates?
Sorry, not recently. Life just takes a lot of time. And plugging in by wire fixed it for the time being for the computer.

Hoping to spend some more troubleshooting time at Christmas when I have some more free time.

Thanks for following up!

That does sound more and more like disabling the RSC over wifi. Definitely please update us once you find the solution. I wonder if it's a common issue with all IPSEC VPNs; I'd stick the knowledge into the archives section of my brain for future reference.

I had to download a big file so I had a chance to check things again.

Wired to ASUS router or CGU with Fios - ~1100kB/s
Connected to WiFi on ASUS router - 6kB/s dl failed
Connected to work iPhone via WiFi with one bar ATT - 400kB/s

No vpn for anything.

On my personal phone I got a wifi speedtest of this:

IMG_7665.webp

Which isn’t 6kB/s I don’t think, but it’s also not the 300/300 that is our service level. In the past I’ve been able to verify full speed pretty readily.
