A guy on medical sick leave saw a shark going after children. He bravely went out and grabbed the shark with his bare hands to defend them. [And this guy is not exactly young.]
His reward?
His employers fired him because he was on sick leave and this proves he was not sick.
What doo doo heads!

We have a pretty good account of him wrestling with the shark. We have NO account of what his work situation was.

How can any judgement be made without all the facts?

Thats why I don't grab sharks anymore..

He was on sick leave for stress. If he'd been out for surgery or a broken leg then sure, fire him for lying. But he was de-stressing in a way of his own choosing, and saved lives in an emergency situation.

His employer is a piece of excrement.

Sounds like he should have been on vacation. I don't know what "sick leave" refers to in the UK, but claiming stress in order to use sick time instead of vacation is grounds for termination to me. I stand with the employer based on the limited information.

If there is any truth to it, it was probably from stress induced by the POS boss he worked for. This event appears to prove it.

It is really unfortunate in a way, but I tend to agree, IF de-stressing was an excuse for using sick time for vacation. I know of some folks that do this - their company makes sick leave use or lose, and below a certain number of days there is no doctor note requirement, so they take a day off every so often. It doesnt strike me as being right, even if the CEO of the company makes big bucks off their labor. Same kind of deal here.

But I agree with the above comment that we just dont really know enough...

I don't think this is a case of "use it or lose it", as he was on a two month break. I don't think they're even that sick-day-happy in Greece. But he had to give a reason for that long of an absence, and using work-related stress as an excuse seems ridiculous. I'm guessing he was on an unpaid leave, similar to FMLA (family medical leave of absence) here in CA, but to travel half-way around the world (literally!) to de-stress seems a bit much.

We're making assumptions that the UK has the same sick rules that we have in the US. They do not. They, like most countries in Europe, start with 4 or 5 weeks of vacation per year. things are quite different on that side of the Atlantic. We just need to have some UK folks comment before we show our ignorance too much.

Based upon the limited information provided, I don't have any sympathy for the guy. He's on medical leave for stress? Life is stressful-buck up and deal with it rather than wallowing in a cesspool of self pity and taking medical leave for stress.

He was caught out playing while he was on medical leave for a trumped up ailment, and it got him fired. Both him and his former employer are better off.

I don't really know enough about British labor laws or sick leave to form much of an opinion. From what I do know, I suspect the situation is much more ambiguous than if the same thing happened in the USA.

For the good and the bad, attitudes towards health care, mental health, sick leave, vacation, and work in general, are significantly different in Europe than in the USA. It's on one extreme, where health/family are prioritized over work vs. Japan & USA, where it's the opposite.

It's tough to explain but for my family in Poland, going to the beach each summer is viewed more in medical terms. I can't think of any equivalent here.
