Interesting story. Crazy that it lasted that long without causing issue.

I would hope that's a thermometer.
 
Odd things can happen. My nephew was in an accident years ago. For a year or two after the accident he had a peculiar lump on his hand, it didn't cause him discomfort, sort of it was just there. At some point what seemed to be acne formed at the lump. After some squeezing and massaging of the lump/acne, out popped a piece of clear plastic. It was a part of the radio face from the accident.

Since old guys don't notice they left their blinker on for miles and miles, this is a natural extension of that phenomenon.
 
I'm surprised the lever is still in decent shape.

Years ago, some engineers had me do forensic analysis on a shift lever found in an accident victim at the hospital.
