Major Automakers Start New Charging Network

IONNA update today.

12 sites open, 15 more under construction, 200 locations under contract.

Looks like there will be a membership system coming like many networks have.

BMW & Mercedes Plug and Charge live now. Plug and Charger for GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Stellantis coming soon.

Finally got a chance to charge at IONNA. Plug & Charge with the Blazer EV. Great cables and cable management, Up to 1,000v and 600A capable. CCS1 and NACS cables. Excellent all around!

Missed the post edit time window: Live charger status and pricing in the car too.

Long video, but IONNA had a media event recently. They’re still aggressively building chargers.

> 500 bays open
> 1,200 bays under comstruxtion
> 3,000 bays in permitting or beyond
> 4,000 bays under contract

I visit charge at one frequently and they’re excellent. 🤩

Never tried an Ionna station. Price will be key, Tesla Superchargers are a great deal with a membership.

On a side note, I think charging stations should have to display their per-kwh rates like gas stations have to show their per gallon prices.

Thing with lots of ionanna's is that they aren't right off a freeway interchange like traditional fuel, or most superchargers, you have to go into town.

They seem to be growing, I'm curious to understand more about how this business works.

Loss leader for companies that want to sell EVs. They're realizing what Tesla realized years ago: the biggest impediment for many people in transitioning to EVs is the lack of reliable charging infrastructure. By partnering, they can reduce the cost of each of them trying to deploy a network separately while improving on what Tesla offers by supporting 800V and any charging port location. They are using the same Alpitronic chargers that the MB Network is deploying at Buc-ees. Awesome chargers with long cords and support for both CCS and NACS. it's basically a loss leader to help their EV investments pan out.

I wish they would license the CATL golden battery LFP tech and go with the HYC1000 chargers.

I’m in Minneapolis/St. Paul and the 5 (so far) in the metro are all right on the freeways.

They’re getting these up FAST. 3-4 weeks from groundbreaking to activating in many instances.

I'd still call these in town.

When I looked this up on plugshare a couple of these location dont show up until I look at "coming soon".

Now a 10% discount for GM EVs at IONNA. I’d assume other IONNA partner EVs will ultimately get a discount too (Toyota, BMW, Hyundai/Kia, etc.).

Still haven't used my EVgo credits from last year. I just don't travel far enough from home very often. I like the canopy though. Plugging in sucks when it's raining out.

I let some EVGo credits from last year expire, but I have about $8 left from another program this year. I DCFC a ton, but there’s not many EVGos on my routes 🫤. I see permits for 3 or 4 more EVGo stations in my area though - hopefully they get built this spring/summer.

IONNA is teaming up with Circle K. Sounds like IONNA will be removing Circle K charging equipment at 85 locations (most of them) and upgrading them to full IONNA/Alpitronic sites. There will ultimately be 350 Circle K / IONNA locations 👍👍

Great news. I use Circle K charging often and they’ve been perfectly reliable with their ABB Terra 184 units, but the IONNA network and equipment will be a great upgrade - more power, better cable flexibility and cable management, Plug&Charge for most automakers, better screens, etc.

BMW EVs now get 20% off at IONNA. So generally 31¢/kWh nationally. Plug & Charge is active for BMW (and I assume most all IONNA members).
