Maint Pkg opinions...

I have a new Santa Fe Sport 2.0T because the my previous one was totaled recently (no injuries just sore). With it, the dealership thru in the Hyundai Maint Pkg.

Expires 9/2017 and includes:
9 free oil changes (conventional)
9 free tire rotations
The rest is really fluff. (inspections and fluid top-off etc.)

I drive 13-15k mi a year and conduct oil changes at 3k mi (d.i. turbo / severe)

Question: Would you spread out the the dealer visits so the vehicle is inspected every year for free, up to the expiration date of the Maint Pkg, doing the in-between oil as DIY, OR would you go straight thru with the package until the free bees are done?

Is the Hyundai "severe service" oil change really every 3k? If so, I'd use all my freebies up on those (while it's under warranty).

Normally, I would say save the included visits for winter, but I don't think you have that problem.

Does FL have annual safety inspection requirements? If not, then the annual checkup by the dealer sounds good. If so, then I don't see it really making a difference when they are used.

Is this a program with corporate backing?

If so, I'd see if there was anyway to terminate it with Hyundai USA and get a refund if you want it. If it is a factory program, I'm sure they played with numbers and had you pay for it?

Otherwise, follow the advice and ideas of the other members, all some good thoughts there! Not sure which approach I would take. Both of your ideas sound reasonable. You could use them up on the severe service, BUT if you are anxious to do some oil changes yourself, you might want your one year dealer visits spread out plan.

Yes, the severe service is 3k mi for the d.i. turbos (be it conventional or synthetic)
No, FL has no yearly safety inspection
No, this is thru the dealership but i was advised by HyundaiUSA that the Factory will back it. (questionable).

Think I'd do every other one myself, so the tire rotations were done every 6K, with Hyundai filters, of course (warranty reasons).

The dealership could choose to terminate it at any time. I suspect the contract says they can do that whenever they want, hence my suggestion to just use it all up while you can.

I would just drain and fill the oil at 3k, let the dealer do an oil and filter change every 6k with tire rotation. Best compromise in my opinion.

Using conventional in turbo applications makes me a bit uneasy, especially in warm FL.

Our Honda's engine is known for being hard on oil. Our dealership will give free oil changes (semi-syn) but I have still opted to change the oil myself with TGMO. I am video taping the oil changes for warranty purposes and saving the receipts.

Between the Dual Scroll Turbo, direct injection, etc., 3000 mile oil changes with severe driving in the mix is not a bad idea.

Considering the price a good synthetic oil is a good idea too.

I would make sure that whatever oil I used would pass Hyundai's spec & preferably a tougher one such as GM's Dexos 1, or similar spec for a DI engine. IMO that would be my main concern with the dealer OCs, make sure it's not some cheap bulk conventional oil!

Hyundai does not have stringent oil requirements for the SFS 2.0T (except for OCI):

SM/GF-4/5w or 10W30. Even SL is accepted (all in the OM)

Oil cap says 5w30. (my previous SFS 2.0T's oil cap said 5w20)

Most conventionals contain synthetic these days anyway.

There have been used oil analysis on this site from the Hyundai motors -- they don't seem to be fussy about the oil.

Hey wemay, I'd disregard the previous response regarding your vehicle of choice; I'm glad to hear you got a replacement and that you came through in one piece

If it were me personally, I like the idea of spreading the services out over time (especially for those occasions when it gets cold or you're simply strapped for time/energy to do the OC yourself), but if as dparm said there's a clause that says the dealer could terminate the maintenance package on their own accord, I would use up the services more quickly in that case.

I'm of the view that the only guy you can trust with oil changes is the guy in the mirror.

A business associate just tried to negotiate free oil changes for my G. I "politely" declined. It would be Valvoline Synpower, for what it's worth. If they give me the fluids and let me do it, no problem, but it wouldn't work that way.

Ill give it a shot. See how clean they leave the undertray, which was a petty but real concern for me. Not to mention my OCD with this stuff.

As an aside, i have a stash of syn and conv that i bought for $1-$3/qt during the AZ clearance. I will be taking this oil to the dealership so i know what i'm getting incase i dont like the bulk oil situation.
