Agreed on that brand " gold plug" seem very strong and high quality.

They use a coated mag - it's important to note you can break the coating or any mag by aggressively snapping thing to and from it- especially neodymiums.

How strong? it easily held this 1.5 pound hammer.

I've been using magnetic drain plugs for years. All have been aluminum engines with top notch oil filters yet the magnets would still catch and hold goo during an oil change.

The argument that, "oh the oil filter will catch it" doesn't apply. If the oil filter would have caught it, it wouldn't have stuck to the magnet. Simple as that.

The particles are most likely on the 1-10 micron range that is not typically caught by the filter. If the magnet manages to catch and get some extra stuff out, each and every oil change with no extra effort on your end, apart from installing the magnetic drain plug, I see it as a WIN for those looking for the ULTIMATE in filtration at a low cost.

"Why" a mag or not is even a debate is a mystery to me.

"Where" is really the question.

Jim Fitch from Noria probably the foremost expert on the subject calls it - wherever practical use one. I use them everywhere.
