Magnets?

I was thinking of adding either a magnet on the oil pan or a smaller one on the end of the mag drain plug to make it stronger(Mag. plug from Pepboys and not very strong). I have read and searched here on the oil filter ones, but they seem to be expensive and you have to replace it everytime you get an new vehicle, plus it is still up in the air if they have any effect on a metal bypass system. I also read that a magnet on the oil pan will magnetize the entire pan even when you take the magnet off, but I would rather live with that then have a filter magnet that messes with the internal parts, plus it has been said that you can break the magnetism on the pan by hitting it a few times. So, I am thinking the best rout is to either put a magnet on the pan near the drainplug, or to get a smaller magnet to stick on the end of my drain plus to make it stronger, so can you guys tell me where to get some magnets that can be used in automotive applications. Will probably add a few smaller ones on the end of my trans and diff drain plugs too. thanks
 
Not a bad idea for like the first 5 - 10, 000 miles after that .... wouldn't worry about it.
 
I imagine many of the wear metals are not ferrous, so your magnet will not pick up lead, aluminum, copper, brass, etc.

So I really doubt the overall usefulness of magnetic drain plugs and other such devices.
 
not an expert here, but ferrous materials are a lot harder, hence more abrasive then the lead, cupper, al, brass. So magnets are usefull IMO. But if you're going to be doing used oil analysis using magnets would lead to falsely low Iron readings.
 
I doubt magnets will make a difference... the filter catches plenty based on size alone

Break open a few old computer hard drives and inside each one you'll find a very small but extremely strong rare earth magnet made of neodymium, which is just the ticket for auto use to catch all those ferrous metals!
Might I suggest attaching one to the bottom of your full flow oil filter cartridge, and don't remove it until you have unscrewed the cartridge from the vehicle at change time - then remove it and place on the bottom of the new one!

Don't believe eveything everyone tells you about non ferrous metals in the presence of strong magnetic fields either - these very strong neodymium rare earth magnets acn have some weird effects on non ferrous (aluminium for ex) metals.

I once witnessed an experiment where a rare earth neodymium magnet would repel a suspended aluminium disc as it was moved toward it - but, at the same time - would attract the aluminium disc as it was pulled away from it!

Very unusual!
