Magnefine In-Line Filter Cut Open ~30,000kms

Nothing really to report here. Comes off a 2001 Toyota Echo which to be honest doesn't really need an extra transmission filter. I put one in as a project at 250,000kms as well as fluid change and an external transmission cooler (more overkill, I know). Car is just under 280,000kms now.

Filter looks fine, I replaced it with a new one and will probably leave it on for 50,000kms as long as the car keeps going.

Very little metal mush on the magnet, but nothing noticeable in the filter pleats.

I tried to remove the magnet but it broke in the process, that is some strong glue.

Things aren't cheap in Canada, about $35 CDN on amazon was the cheapest I could get it shipped to me, but replacing it every 3 years is a minimal cost and makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

And thats the new metal one. Rather than the older plastic one. Did you have to cut it apart or was there a way to unscrew. I have had similar results when I open a used Magnefine.

I had to cut it with my filter cutter (aka exhaust cutter). It is welded together.

Is the blackish ring attached to the filter media the magnet? If so I think thats different than the ones with a plastic case. Those I think had the magnet in the middle of the flow and the ATF had to run around it. (If memory serves me right).

Yes it was glued on very well. The fluid would go in the magnet side past the magnet and through the filter.

Ah I didn't think that far ahead.

No worries! I've used magnefines on the Sienna I had before. Didn't make that much of a difference, but the magnet did catch some particles.

That filter was a design they bought rights from TransProtect. Except the new patent owners won't use the fine filtering filter that the patant states because the fine filter cost too much. The one we see here filters like crap compared to the original patented filter.

This will help to keep the magnet in the pan cleaner.

I had a plastic one leak and switched to a Derale with spin on Fram XG, finned cooling sleeve, and one of these (arrived today for future project)

I remember reading a Sayles and Mcheprson article talking about the frightening amount of metal in trans fluid.

My pan mags are always covered and I do frequent drain and fills but tow a lot at a moderate to high weights for a half ton.

Probably a good idea to put an inline mag in.
