Maaco paint jobs?

I had Earl Scheib paint an '81 Plymouth Reliant K back in 1992-1993 for around $200. Looked ok for about 3 years then the paint on the bumpers started flaking off. Didn't care at the point since the car constantly need repairs.

My paint job (likely an upgraded single stage) plus pin stripe was $560 in 2003. The cheapie ones were $199 on sale, and urethane base coat/clear coat was $1299 at the time. The car itself was $250.

The local Maaco gets a lot of cabbie/Uber/‘hood(for scrapers and donks) business. They push Sherwin-Williams(the car side of SW, not the namesake stores) paint, since Maaco is a franchise and is obligated to use SW paint.

Back in the 80's a car buddy of mine had a Pontiac Grand Prix painted at Maico. He did the prep work and all they had to do was spray paint the car. It turned out looking great. We don't have a Maico in my area and I don't know how good they are in todays world. If I had an older car and wanted a quick inexpensive job I might give it a try.

Paint is ridiculously expensive nowadays - I have no idea what Maaco is charging for paints jobs now, but it can’t be anywhere near what they used to charge for paint jobs, right? Christ, I didn’t even know they were still in business.

What’s a typical paint job from them go for now?

Is urethane paint the best auto paint?
All car paint these days are urethane-based, be it acrylic urethane(most “automotive” paint systems) or polyurethane(Axalta Imron/PPG Delfleet). You can buy acrylic enamel or lacquer from one of the off brands or the “value” lines of the major brands(PPG Omni/Shop-Line or Axalta Nason) but it’s rarely used.

Almost everything except for Toyota 040 Super White/202 Black, Ford Oxford White/School Bus Yellow and GM’s base white is base coat/clearcoat.

Just like house paint with professional/good/better/best, there is the same dichotomy with car paint. What matters in any case is prep. Maaco won’t do much of that.
