M1 in a 1997 Buick Regal?

That's the same engine I have in my LeSabre.

6 quarts of Maxlife 10W-30 and an AC Delco oversize PF52.

You can run 10W-40 in the summer if you want to.

Yes, I said 6 quarts.

5 quarts takes it right up to the full line with a PF52 in the L36, Merkava, why would you run 6?

Shouldn't be any problem with M1 in that engine.

can i have both? how long can i expect for an OCI with that combo?

i already bought this stuff so i am going to try it, if it doesn't seem to work good, then i will try the Maxlife synthetic, but i have only seen the blended

The 3.8 is easy on oil.
If the car has a 'Oil Life Monitor', go by that.
Synthetic will work fine if you want to run that oil out to the last 10% on the OLM.
If no OLM, 4-5000 is good for conventional oil, Synthetic will go 7500 easy.
PF52/3980 oversize filter is the way to go there too!

got it in today. used 10W-30 M1 and a 201 (PF-52 SIZED) filter. no oil life monitor, well at least not one that shows %. hopefully it does ok. i am planning to go 5,500 on this change and then have an analysis done.

is this a good plan?

skip the analysis and just go 8k miles with filter change at 4k interval, which gives you a chance to add a quart of fresh motor juice. you can go with 5W30 as well and get a mile extra per gallon. that motor is very easy on oil and has a large capacity.

I run 6 quarts because the L36 runs just fine on 6 quarts with no discernible differences in engine operation from running with 5 quarts. That tells me the crank counter weights are plenty far enough away from the oil level to stay clear of the oil line; even with a quart over. If the pick up tube is long enough, which I believe it is, the engineer can have the oil line far enough away for the allowance of the extra quart.

4K on the filter? Why? That makes no sense at all with the info here on BITOG. Show me one UOA where the filter was worn out below 7.5K (or even 10K).

How is the 5W30 going to get him extra MPG? Going from a 10.0 cSt oil (M1 10W-30) to an 11.3 cSt oil (M1 5w30), the only way that could be is at lower temps, so it's only if he makes a lot of short trips.

Good to know there's some wiggle room. Thanks.

That's what THEY say.

any idea of what the cSt of Havoline 10-30 is?

They are basically the same once they start coming up to temperature but in any cold condition scenario the 5w30 is better.

Once up to temperature they are equals but the 5w30 is better the cooler it gets.
