M1 Euro 0w40 vs Pennzoil Ultra 10w30

Pennzoil Ultra 10w30 is super thin, not to mention it doesnt have any specs for bmw. Personally I do not like Mobil 1 in either my e92 or TJ (both inline 6's famous for ticking) I'm not saying it always happens but if you look around hard enough you'll see people who have these kind of engines tend to experience noisier ticking with Mobil 1. I just bought Castrol Edge 0w40 which is BMW LL01 approved and made in germany so its the good old german castrol and not your typical [censored]. Plus amazon and walmart have it for just $23 per 5 Qt jug.

As for cleaning the german castrol has a fair amount of magnesium in it which is better than calcium. (Every euro oil ive seen has magnesium which is good) Rotella T6 is also common to use in these type of engines and have even more magnesium but it isnt spec'd for bmw and whether you believe in the myth of ruining your cats or not might not be worth the worry. I say german castrol all the way for these engines!

Ha.

If I look hard enough I can find people that say the earth is flat,so that's hardly a useful metric to qualify the quality of an oil.

The current castrol offering IS NOT the "German castrol" of days gone by though it is a good product.

Both the euro castrol and euro m1 carry the Porsche A-40 certification. So according to Porsche they are functionally equal and can be used interchangeably in service for their vehicles.
Increased engine acoustics is meaningless for the most part on a known healthy engine so again it's not a metric for the measure of the quality of a lubricant.

Many owners on the M3 forum are running M1 Euro 0W40 and showing an average decrease in lead levels in their oil reports. I have not seen any oil reports of PU at all, but have bought into the hype of their new natural gas refined base stock leading to superior cleaning of the engine.

I've also read that the HTHS of the oil for my car should be around 3.5 and I have no idea what it is for either product.

Any sort of guidance would be greatly appreciated.

IIRC, Pennzoil Ultra does not meet the BMW LL01 spec while Mobil 1 0W-40 Euro Car does. Should be a no-brainer.

Isn't 10W-60 only for running in your M3 when you want to track the car?

I believe PP is LL-01 certified, so if PUP is a grade higher then I assumed it would be suitable as well. BMW only specs 10W60 now, regardless of whether you run it at the track or not.

No because none of the PUP grades have HT/HS viscosity of at least 3.5 cP, and that's one of the basic requirements of the LL-01 spec.

Next time you buy oil look at the back of any castrol bottle it will say made in usa but the 0w40 will say Made in Germany which means its German made. Even if Acoustics don't affect anything it sure as [censored] is annoying to have a car that sounds like an angry sewing machine. Plus at least where I'm from the castrol is $23 where the mobil 1 is $29. You also say the quality is the same so why pay more for mobil 1 just to possibly get a noisy engine? even if it were the same price id get the castrol 0w40 but thats just my 2 cents

I'm from about where you're from and the Mobil 1 is $8 cheaper per jug than the Castrol ($14.44....with Mobil 1 $12 rebate through Oct). So at 35% cheaper the past couple of months, I "have" to buy the Mobil 1. Maybe a couple oil changes down the road I'll try the Castrol at $22 if it's the cheapest available....or the 0w-40 doesn't work as well for me. I've been using Mobil 1 (5w-30) in my 5.7 liter V8 for the past 4 years and it's quiet to me.

if its cheaper and your engine likes it continue to use it but I know its common to cause ticking in Jeeps with the 4.0 and these bmw's. Do a google search Mobil 1 ticking engine or anything along those lines you will get many results I know I have had Mobil 1 in my jeep and a previous car i owned and it happened to both of them. Even if this isn't an issue I do not want my engine sounding like an angry sewing machine.
