The Russian Oil Club had M1 5W30 EP at about 9% IIRC. I can't visit that site at the moment, but there is a thread in the BITOG VOA section with links to a whole bunch of detailed VOAs. Kind of a strange source, but the info seems kosher as far as I can tell.
I'm pretty sure they also have a VOA for plain 'ol M1 5W30 that might also be worth looking at.
Volatility within reason Doesn't seem to cause consumption or reduce consumption. In Fact Ive had worse oil usage with low noack oils.
Just saying. If it ain't a jet don't fret.
I have a GMT-900 Silverado which are known to have oil consumption issues. I was previously running PP and thought I noticed some oil consumption so I switched the Valvoline SynPower on the last oil change but I am experiencing oil consumption again.
I want to try M1 or M1 EP to see if that helps with the consumption since I am due for a change in about 1,000 miles. If nothing changes with M1 I'll probably go back to PP.
I replaced mine with the updated valve cover probably 4 years ago and it still uses oil. I have had AFM turned off for atleast 5 year, maybe 6. I don't remember exactly but I know I had over 50,000 miles on it before I turned AFM off but the damage was probably already done.
The final "fix" is replacing pistons and rings but that is still not guaranteed to fix the oil consumption.
For step #2, you need to clean carbon from the cylinder/free-up rings (per the TSB). Purchase 1 quart of Kreen: http://www.kanolabs.com/engCle.html
Half a can in your gas, half a can in your oil. Run for 1000 miles, then do an oil change.
You seem to be a fan of the top-tier synthetics. Castrol EDGE turns in excellent UOA's with LS engines, and their high mileage 10w-40 isn't overly thick @ 14.78 cSt.
I have also done the carbon clean on the truck too. That was done around the middle of 2016. I only run Top-Tier fuel and run a bottle of lucas or techron occasionally.
I've used BG44K, Techron and Lucas in the fuel tank. I also had my local dealer do the Top End cleaning/piston soak when we were trying to diagnose a problem.
