I've never been a M1 guy but was planning on trying it put in my '11 5.7l Ram. My question is regarding standard M1, vs the EP option.

How do the two compare? Aside from the longer life, is there any advantages to the EP as far as additives, moly, etc?

My truck usually wants the oil changed around 8k by the OLM. Would it be worth it to spend the extra money on the EP? Anti-wear and efficiency are my main concerns.

Either would be overkill at 8k intervals. Just use your Amsoil so you don't have to change your signature. W/O looking at the TDS I believe the EP has better MRV/CCS. What's wrong with Amsoil OE? You obviously must be a preferred customer.

How can it be determined to be overkill without UOA's? My wifes 10 Armada does a pretty good job tearing up M1 5-30 around the 8k mark.

For about $5 more (assuming your 7qt) an OCI I'd go EP 10k and do a UOA to see where your at.

Depends on the driving. My OCIs are 5000 with synthetic. UOAs prove that a short tripper (2 miles to work) beats oil to death quickly. So, I stick with 5000. Oil is cheap and I plan to keep every vehicle to 200,000 miles minimum. I would get the M-1 and do a uoa at 5000 miles and see where you are. You might be surprised.

True that, my wife's KIA minivan gets short tripped quite a bit and UOA shows top tier syns are about done at 7k with her use. That's why you do UOA's, otherwise you're just guessing.

If you are going to do 10K OCIs , that's typical for reg M1. If you plan to go beyond, then you might what to use EP. I frankly know several that do 12-15K and over with reg M1 with outstanding results. Engines with well over 300K. To my knowledge none have ever done a UOA.

The OP is not guessing. The OP does not have an '10 Armada or Kia minivan. The OP has an '11 Ram with an OLM so the type of driving does not matter since the OLM takes that into account.

There have been plenty of tests done that prove regular M1 will easily go 10k. So if the OLM on the OP's truck wants the oil changed at 8k, regular M1 is overkill.

Amsoil OE would make it past 8k too. I find it strange how members here are buying premium oils and changing the oil earlier, even with the guidance of an OLM. There is volumes of information available here proving that extending intervals lowers wear.

I'll say it again, the truck is already three years old in Michigan. It will be totaled by a pothole, rust, or texting teenage girl L-O-N-G before that engine shows any wear from using M1 past 8k in this application.
