I did a search and didn't see anything on this topic.

I have found that Mobil 1 10W40 EP is hard to find, but if I am not mistaken, I have also heard it is an excellent oil...(meets ACEA A3, cSt 14.2).

Anyway, since it is so hard to find (assuming a car takes 6 quarts like my Audi A4 V6), could I not take 3 M1 5W30 EP and 3 M1 15W50 EP and get my own M1 10W40 EP? Am I oversimplying things.

I always believed that if you mixed for example, a 5w30 & a 5W-40, you didn't have either but a worthless glob.

Can you enlighten me here?

I make my own 10-30 Delo the same way
1/2 5/20 Chevron Supreme (Kragen)
1/2 15w40 Delo (WM). I know I can just order it
from a Cevron distrutor but this is cheaper and easier to get when I need it.

Mobil says you can mix them anyway you like. Your 50/50 mix will work great. I used to do it with the regular M1 5W30 and 15W50 before the 0W40 and 5W40 came out.

Curtis this is what I am doing to achieve 10w-40 EP. I mix 50%/50% M1 5w30 EP and 15w-50 EP. The calculation works out as racer12306 shows. All Mobil 1 oils are fully compatible so no worries.

The 10w-40 EP is nearly impossible to find, so I've given up looking. Only place I've seen it is online, but it costs $8 bucks a quart-- so I'll just keep mixing.

Just to clarify, I do use GC 0W30 and have been very pleased with it. I started using it around 25,000 miles in my A4 (currently at 75,000 miles). I am just always making contingency plans for it if I can't find it (in the future). I am going with a 7,500 mile oil change.

I had considered the M1 5W40 (especially in Colorado winter), but was kind of headed down more the path of readily available oils. The M1 5W40 seems to be hit and miss when I have looked (especially 5 qt jugs). When I did try the M1 0W40 early on, the V6 seemed to go through it a bit (like 1 qt in 3,000 miles). I don't have that issue with GC 0W30.

I can find M1 5W30 and M1 15W50 in both quarts and 5qt jugs at pretty much any store.

Thanks for the replies.

CoyoteMan, nope that just isn't so. Most people here don't mind oil mixing at all. Alot say it is best to mix with the same brand rather than different brands, but it should never really be a problem.

Another thing on mixing:
Some brands have the same additive theory across all grades, but not the same theory between different lines.
Using oils with different additive theories opens you up to earlier additive depletion than you'd have if all oils had the same style of add pack.
Take Castrol.
You have GTX, Synthetic blend and Syntec.
Last time I saw side by side VOA, two of the three used what looked like the same formula. The other one had a formula with a substantially different evident theory of additive formation, with, for instance, no Moly vs having Moly in the other two.
M1 in particular seems to use the same theory for all of their oils except for M1 Truck and SUV.
As far as oils with the same brand and series, 95% of the time it'll be the same. The place you're most likely to see big differences is in the 5W20 products. This difference was probably largert during the SL era, as the new-fangled theories that were being used for SL 5W20 products are now trickling down to more mundane oils like 5W30 and 10W30 during our current SM era. The demands of SM and GF-4 are likely responsible for much of this shift to newer (more expensive) technologies.

CN,

No worries. Good plan. I used M1 with good results in my A4 1.8t before I learned about GC and switched to it. My A4 1.8t likes GC much better.
