This is the 3rd UOA on the car taken at 105885 miles. It used 1/2 pint of oil over this interval and a wix 51348 oil filter. It also got a new timing belt, water pump, thermostat and coolant replaced at the same time. I'm noticing longer times to reach normal operating temp now, not good, I may try another thermostat.

Can't hate this report.

Go with another thermostat. New 0nes frequently don't work. Test it in boiling water before installation.

The thermostat has a lifetime warranty so I'll be exchanging it, I'll also be sure to test the new one before it's installed.

Bumping this. Any chance of the UOA again, if the OP is still around? Trying to get some insight into these engines a bit, and this is one of the few UOA's that is higher than 3,000 miles. :)

Stuart Hughes is the NEON resident guru. I couldn't find the 5w-20 UOA ..but here's one from Stuart which is nearer your mileage range

One of the reasons that I have a co-interest here is that I'm charged with my son's 96 for a bit. I think I'm going to start using the 0w-10 oil in it. I've convinced my wife to drive the thing ..which has a near new interior ..but looks like it's been through some urban live combat zone on the outside.

Absolutely incredible for using PYB, with the conditions IMO! I generally use either 5W20/30, whichever I can get my hands on. It's good to see that there is at least the possibility of getting what I am looking to!

The 420A (SOHC) and DOHC engines used in the neon are very basic mechanically but because of that are mechanically quite sound. Chane all seals as they die (often for OEM stuff) with FelPro and the like and keep up with sensors dieing and the powertrain should last for years.

My friend had a '97 that blew its rear main seal on my garage floor, one week after changing the oil (QS I think). There was nothing on the dipstick. In spite of my advice he decided to drive the car fifteen minutes down the road, to his mechanic's shop. I dumped some Valvoline into the engine and decided to tag along because I had never experienced a ceased engine before.

Well, I didn't get that chance that day. Bloody thing kept running and without a hitch. When we got to the shop the mechanic's eyes doubled in size so we popped the valve cover off to see what was up. Nothing terrible at all, below normal wear levels on the cams and everything.

I must say, the neons aren't powerful but darn they do keep on trucking.
