M1 0w40 FS vs Shell Helix Ultra 5w40

Helix Ultra should be the same as Pennzoil Platinum Euro or Quaker State Euro which are both well discussed on the forum,
This. I used both oils interchangeably for years for the ML 500 V8. Both oils are great. If I recall, the M1 had a HTHS of 3.6 and the Pennzoil Euro (Or Helix Ultra in this case) has a HTHS of 3.7 or 3.8. Both oils were smooth in operation. However, using my subjective hearing and butt feels, when I use to make the switch, the Pennzoil/Helix made the engine more "quite". I can't prove it, I could only feel it, so there's that.

In the end, you cannot go wrong with either. I prefer Shell products over M1 not based of any scientific facts but just because I do.

this can be considered as "almost equal" parameter product ?
if yes, shu has good prices

M1 0W40 and SHU 5W40 are both the top tier oils from two well respected companies, Mobil and Shell.

Both are ACEA A3/B4, MB 229.5, VW 502/505 and Porsche A40 rated full synthetics.

Shell Helix Ultra also carries API SP and BMW LL-01, but I'm not too sure where Mobil 1 stands with these two (a quick google says SN & no BMW for M1, but I'm happy to be corrected).

Plus in very cold climates the 0Wx (-40 C pumping) vs 5Wx (-35 C pumping) may be important to some.

I believe M1 is more PAO based and SHU is more GTL based.

But yes, for most applications I would consider them functional equals, and both of the highest quality.

I would happily use either, but I only use SHU because for me it's half the price of M1.

M1 0W40 FS has nicer data sheets, they list
KV100 = 12.9 cSt
KV 40 = 70.8 cSt
HTHS = 3.6 cP
SA = 1.34 %
Phos = 1000 ppm
Zn = 1100 ppm
TBN = 12.6
PP = -60 C
FP = 226 C
density = 0.846

SHU 5W40 give
KV100 = 12.8 cSt
KV40 = 75.7 cSt
VI = 170
PP = -36 C
FP = 235 C
density = 0.843

Both PP & FP above are D97 & D92 for both.

The SHU is also Ferrari approved, if that matters to you.

And whatever it means to Ferrari, which isn’t much.
Exactly, but to certain people, that prancing horse logo on the jug, probably means a lot.

The Shell stats look old to me, could be wrong, what year was the data sheet from when it comes to the Helix? I’m sure the PP for Helix/Euro is -40 or -45 now. Also I’m pretty sure the VI index would be higher for 0w40 M1 than the Helix. I could be wrong I haven’t checked the sheets for a while.

Here is the data sheet, it's for the SP rated SHU from the Shell-livedocs web site, it looks like 2019

Yes I agree the M1 should have a higher VI, it just wasn't listed on the data sheet I was looking at, so I couldn't list it above.

I have used 10W-60 and 5W-40 grade Shell Helix Ultra products in multiple Ferrari cars. The oils lose viscosity grades easily. I also feel they were much more volatile than other products. I wanted to like them as they were the "Ferrari" oils but I stopped using them.

I wanted to like them ........ but I stopped using them.

Hi Ali,

I know what you are saying, I've found oils that I wanted to like for various reasons, but in the end I stopped using, because they didn't perform the way I wanted.

In my Nissan X-Trail (Rogue) with QR25DE engine, I decided to use Castrol Edge 5W30 A3/B4 as I got a good deal on it and it was MB 229.5 rated. Yet it had high oil consumption. So for the last oil change I used Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 instead, and oil consumption dropped.

Yet the SHU 5W40 was leftover from my Holden/Opel Astra which I wanted to like in that, but it was way to "tappy" on start up. So I stopped using it in the Astra.

Good figure 🤔

Shell Helix Ultra (in Europe, Asia, Oceania) = Pennzoil Platinum Euro (in North America)

Both M1-FS and SHU (PPE) are well respected, full SAPS, Euro rated A3/B4 oils, that meet tough OEMs like Porsche A40 & MB 229.5. They both have slightly elevated ZDDP (Zn ~ 1000 ppm), high TBN (>10) and low Noack (
I would happily use either, buy on price. For me SHU is easier to find at a good price, so that is the one I prefer to use.

Right now I'm running Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 in my Nissan with QR25DE engine.

Not to single you out but the latest post on this going on since SOPUS bought Pennzoil.
It is not the same, the TDS are way off and has been for some time actually. ROW is basically different from the Americas/SOPUS.

Not the same.
