HAHAHHAHA, it was all the 30-weight love from Ben99GT that finally convinced me to try it. That, and the incredible price.

I just put Castrol Edge 5w30 + Fram Xtended guard filter in mine. Last run was Mobil 1 5w30 EP and it was toasted by 11k miles, was ticking on startup. The Edge is running awesome, the Duratec really likes that thin 8.9 cst.

I don't think the 5W-20EP is the same stuff it used to be, see:

Back in 2007 it had a different VI, FP, PP... that was an awesome oil.

I just finished a 11K OCI with Focus on 5-20EP and the engine sounded no differant than when I changed. Also the oil looked great. Just that nice dark amber colar with no grit all in the oil change pan. In fact when the oil had 9K on it I made a trip to Charlotte, NC and the engine was fine. I first started using EP whem XM first came out with it and I see no differance in the quality of the oil. Just my thoughts.

I've been running Mobil 1 0W-30 in my 2001 Taurus 3.0L DOHC engine continuously since 2006. This was well before it was repackaged as AFE; it's done quite well and is the only oil that will be used in it.

I started using Mobil 1 in 2005 with 5w30 for initial 3k OCI. Next OCI was with Mobil 1 5W-20 for 7K. Subsequent OCI were 0W-30 for 5K.

5w30 was OK, but not spectacular. Next OCI with 5W-20 yielded much better performance, but the lower HT/HS specification of 2.62 was annoying,

In the end I decided to go with 0W-30 because of it's higher HT/HS specification of 2.99 and the endless OEM approvals. Performance is almost as good as with 5W-20.

Extremely satisfied with this oil.

And, depending on application, Total Cost may be lower with the AFE jugs: EP is not sold in jugs for the 5W-20.

I agree that the 5W-20EP is a great oil, too bad I can never find it in the 5 quart jugs anymore. It isn't as good as the 2007 spec stuff was, I'd rather order Amsoil ASM 0W-20 for that price.

I tried to economize with the 5w30EP and it just didn't work. That stuff lasted from April-September, 11k miles and was black as night. Hopefully the thin 5w30 Edge holds up well, the 5 quart of that is readily available.

V tech!

The original poster has a Fusion. It has the Mazda derived VVT, but not vtec. No additional big "fun" lobes on the bumpsticks.

The 3.0 Taurus, Escape, and Five Hundred sadly have neither VVT nor vtec. But the owner can opt in on a 5.8GHz Vtech system as long as he stays near the house.
