I have a Duratec focus also - mine should be same as OPs but just smaller displacement. I don't have DI or any sort of variable valve timing. Mine is quieter on Mobil 1 0w-20 than it is on 5w-20 or the 10w30 (I know, I know ... it was cheap) that is in it now.
I have run two brands of 0w-20 in it. When it was new, I was using Castrol Edge 0w-20 when it would go on sale at Advance Auto parts and I got a good discount. After that I used Mobil 1 0w-20. Both times the 0w-20 were quieter.
I have been trying to drag this OCI out as long as possible, but hopefully end of October I'll be switching back to some Pennzoil Platinum 0w-20 ... whatever that is ... and I'm sure it will be nice and quiet

I can attest to that. Anything I tried with high boron made the valvetrains in both my old Subaru and my wife's Corolla a lot quieter, be it conventional or synthetic.

I noticed the same thing on my old 2005 focus. It would be quite loud on M1 and then when I switched to motorcraft syn blend the engine got very quiet to the point where I thought it was not even on at idle. I thought I was just me until my friend asked me what I did to my car because it was so quiet. We could even have a conversation between the people in the back and the people in the front.
I like M1 and the car being a little louder wont effect the protection the oil provides but there is definitely a difference in noise level for this car at least. Funny to see this same observation here on the same car.

IMO typical of grpIII majority base and group IV. May have to do with homogeneity and concomitant non-polarity.

Regarding the OP, nope, my wife's 5.7L HEMI sounds the exact same on the dealer Pennzoil Conventional 5w20 as it does on AFE 0w-20.

Nope. In my F-150, I started with Pennzoil Ultra 5W-20, switched to Mobil Super 5000 5w20, switched to Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-20, and finally to Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20. There was no "extra" noise caused by M1 and as for the iron shedding, my used oil analysis never showed that M1 shed more iron than any of the other oils.
My Equinox and Malibu ran louder on Mobil 1 High Mileage. Neither are known as quiet engines but the current combos I have in there seem to make the engine the quietest I have experienced.

The noise worries me so much I just stocked up on 50qt's of Mobil 1

If no significant noise difference can be measured between 10W60 and 0W40, I highly doubt there's any difference between brands of the same weight. But go ahead, keep on telling yourself you can distiguish noise change that machines can't.

It has a little tick but nothing I'd call "the hemi tick".
It sounds the same as the last ohv engine I owned. (2000 ls1 camaro)
Even my ranger 4.0 has a slight tick if you listen real close. I'm thinking it's just a common valvetrain noise to ohv engines.
My 5.4 f150 had injector tick before developing cam phaser tick.
It has a little tick but nothing I'd call "the hemi tick".

I switched both my wife's and my car to M1 and noticed no difference in noise. Wife's car was using HGMO and mine was using PP prior.
Eyewitness accounts are among the least accurate pieces of evidence. There have been many studies demonstrating this. Which is why I suggested measuring it with a readily available instrument. Apparently that is a silly idea, though. What is really silly is the number of people that hee and haw about this but refuse to actually prove it despite claiming that the difference is "dramatic"; if it is so dramatic, measuring it, even with crude instrumentation, should be easy.

Oregoonian: have you ever tried the older different decal scheme QSED? It's their synblend and I have 3 jugs that Wal mart clearances for $13 and its 2/21/2014 stuff. That may go in the 03' Taurus of mine. This is 5w20 synblend
