Nope, I didn't make anything up, it was actually measured by a fellow M3 owner. And we are not talking about engine health here, we are talking about a perfectly healthy engine (probably) making different sounds when using the same oil weight.

Are you one of "top" mechanics?

I've actually noticed in the past more noise with old formula SM Mobil 1 0w40, but I think it was just a consequence of oil shearing quite fast with this old formula.

To be fair, with the car, the thinner the oil, the noisier it is, that's why I put 5w50 in it (cf sig).
Maybe it is also related to the ability (or not) of some oil to stick on the surfaces, hence more or less noise at startup.
Some ars are more sensible to oils and oils thickness, I have tried 10w60 and 0w40 in the Barchetta and haven't noticed much difference, but it was noisier with another 10w40 oil (go figure).

Also I am under the impression Mobil 1 is very often changing its oils formula. Mobil 1 0w40 from 5 years ago is different than the «new life» bought recently.
