M-1 oils.....make engines noiser ???

Had a discussion with another BITOG'ER (car51).....about engine noise. We both have used Mobil 1 0w20 for awhile in our 03' Ford Focus'......and then did an OC with Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0w20. Both of us noticed immediatly how much quieter and smoother our engines ran.

I'm wondering if any of you guys have had a similar experience after switching from M-1....to another synthetic.

I can't tell the difference between any oil.

I'll bet your phone has vibration and sound meter apps. Use them to measure the difference for us. Don't forget to repeat the test a few times.

Robert......that was just a dumb comment....because I don't have my Focus with M-1 in it now. The quieter engine was verified by both my son and wife and car51, and the difference in noise was quite dramatic.

Have you been living inside a cave all your life ? Everybody knows Mobil 1 causes engine noise.

I wouldn't say that was a dumb comment. Not many other ways to know for sure whether or not it's actually louder. We all have our own butt dyno and sound meters in our head. Sometimes they aren't right haha but oftentimes people say Mobil 1 is louder in their engines.

Some few years ago there were a lot of comments on here about Mobil 1 being nosier than other popular oils. There was a general conclusion that it was true.

This is what's fixing to go down here. Far too many Mobil 1 fans on here. You are gonna need to get some R-12 hornet and wasp spray to keep 'em off you.

That having been said... I have never run Mobil 1 in my cars. But I have noticed that Castrol w titanium in the gold bottle ran very quiet in my Altima versus the Royal Purple it replaced. I think the RP just was so thin it flowed all back to the case. I still firmly believe RP is a very good oil. Especially the HPS version which I didn't have in the car. It was the regular version of RP. For the price of eggs... The Pennzoil Gold Synthetic blend running in my Altima currently is quieter than the Havoline Pro DS was.
Mobil 1 is a fantastic product. I will get my foolish self to run it in my car at some point and time. I don't really know why I haven't tried it yet. I have run RP, Castrol w titanium gold bottle, Castrol Syntec (exclusively in my old Sentra), Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, Pennzoil Platinum, Havoline Pro DS, Pennzoil Gold Synthetic blend, Valvoline Synpower, Quaker State Ultimate Durability. So everything but Mobil 1 pretty much. Strange. Gotta try some Mobil 1 too

I can't say I have noticed a noise difference from synthetic to synthetic. But going from dino/part synthetic to full synthetic I have noticed a noise difference (quieter) and also the engine is smoother.

Well it'd be about 9 months but my '13 Focus will go from Castrol EDGE Extended Performance to Mobil 1 Extended Performance next OCI...so it will be interesting to see if myself or the wife notices anything. It's kind of a noisy engine to begin with.

My dual vvti is bag of marbles when cold, M1 & PP are identical to my ear. For fun I installed a db meter on the phone (accurate right?) According to that pp is +3db. Even though the M1 is 1cst (10%) thicker it has no difference what so ever.

I know that the Mobil 1 0W20 was little "clacky" or made valvetrain noise I do know for certain. I may use some of my stash of MC synblend after a few oci's of Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0W20 or even my ole' standby Quaker State Conventional 5w20 as that's REAL quiet.

I am used to big fan of M1, and I find Mobil 1 keep changing formulation often. There was a priod of time that their formulation caused loud noise, but so far the latest one I have is OK, not dead quiet but is not obvious. Some phenomenon I notice especially when I deal with high mileage engine is how easy the deposit formed on the engine and sometimes we mistakenly takes it as oil issue, even though actually is deposit formation issue. In my case, this will typically resolve with engine flush or kreen in the oil, that will change the engine noise quickly before the deposit is formed again in a few K miles.

I found M1 and Castrol EDGE 0W20 to be a little quieter in my Liberty than AMSOIL Signature Series 0w20. All three are supposed to be considered good oil here. It could just be a quirk with the vehicle itself?

Yeah, I have heard that some oils with boron and moly can be noticibaly quieter than others. My 97' Bonneville is quiet on Maxlife or even Magnatec 5w30 so dunno

Quaker State Ultimate Durability quieted the engine from M1? What is your OCI withQuaker State Ultimate Durability? I plan on a 7500 mi OCI on Quaker State Ultimate Durability.

Could some of this feeling be from comparing beat up oil with miles on it that might have sheared down somewhat to a nice, fresh oil of a different make?
I'm pretty happy with the sound of Mobil 1 5W30 on really cold ski morning starts compared to Subaru (Idemitsu?) 5W30, and the car bounces around a lot less, too.

I went to 8,200~ with a fram tg also with Quaker State Ultimate Durability 0W20. Going to go probably 9k miles. With Quaker State Ultimate Durability, Quaker State Advanced Durability 5W20 I don't have the slight vavletrain noise
