Which 40K car/SUV carries 7 people, goes from 0-60 in 3.4, has 120Sq feet of cargo space, can tow 6K -and I can fill up in my driveway from a plug?

List the vehicles that provide functional equivalency ICE (barring the home charging) or BEV and let's look at the price tags.

I agree 70 isnt a valid highway range speed test. Even the Norwegians use 120KPH as a range test.
Mini-vans used to do most of this, I did see some towing ~4k camper trailers, and 0-60 of 7-8-9s is fine for most people.
Or a crew cab pickup, can seat 4 adults and 2 kids pretty well.

I don't understand why people think an EV is going to get max range on a highway when drag is the biggest cause of energy consumption on the highway. The 440 range number is not an all-highway range number. The biggest thing someone can do to increase range is lower their average speed.

The new Bolt and Leaf are about to ship for $30,000. IMO, average income people shouldn't be buying new cars anyway. I made well over $100,000 before I bought my second new car. It was my first new car in 25 years. It was still a mistake. Buying a new vehicle is like lighting money on fire.

This varies substantially based on personal circumstances. For people that charge at home, the vast majority will see half the expense as compared to gas. For people that must use public chargers, yes, they will pay around the same as gas. I wouldn't bother going electric if I was unable to charge at home.

I'd be willing to bet that's one of the last thing buyers are thinking about when signing to take one home. I was shocked at how many Lexus customers whined about the premium fuel requirement in performance vehicles. It's $110,000 vehicle you cheapskate get over it.
I complain on all grades of gasoline. Our beloved Tundra is one thirsty girl!

The EPA range isn't even a highway rating. The Gravity has a 103 MPGe highway rating. The battery is 123 kWh. That's 370 miles all highway. The lower the speed, the more likely it is to get close to the EPA range.

I guess I kind of agree with UncleDave that this big EV SUV does actually kind of work as a big ice SUV replacement, if you can find chargers fast enough in your area. The huge battery gives good practical range, and the fast charging is quite fast , as a 30% bump up, gives you a lot of range.

For the lower priced(smaller battery capacity) vehicles, things get less practical in more circumstances.
I did the math for my electricity rates and a 4 season climate(in the winter it needs to charge 1-2-3% of battery everyday just sitting there, especially if you want to start at 90+%), then range loss to snow, snow tires, heating the battery, heating the interior of the car, range loss parked overnight not on a charger.
So a 300 mile Leaf range is gets cut to 180-210 miles if you want to run the battery for long life, and then places with winter, need the heat running for half the year, drag from snow and tires, we are down to 120-150 miles. I see now a 2026 can use a Tesla supercharger, so its about a 1/2 hour to charge from 20 to 80% for another 120-150 miles.

At my budget anyways, an ICE car is still winning by a lot, cost and minimal PITA factor. But as the tech and charging infrastructure improves, it may make sense in 5-10 years. The new Leaf is a good improvement, as the old one didn't really work even for my local use.

120kph is 75mph, not too big of a difference. You will lose some efficiency, .1-.2 in my Mach-E, .2-.3 in the Lightning. Just how much, depends on the aerodynamics and increase in tire rolling resistance, among other factors.

I didnt make it well, but my point was that 75 is the lowest I'd accept as a number for highway/freeway travel and that 70 isnt a useful range proxy for myself.

True, around here 70 would not mean much. There are still some parts of the US that speed limits are pretty strictly enforced. The upper midwest comes to mind.

Or, you can buy a used Mach E Premium that gets 200 miles, even in winter, for the same price as the Leaf. A 200 mile trip in an EV during winter isn't that much of a challenge if you have two things: (1) a home charger to keep the battery from getting cold soaked and (2) a heat pump. There are several vehicles with heat pumps available used under $30,000, including Hyundai, Tesla, Nissan, and Audi.
 
It's the EPA methodology. I think Lucid is using the five cycle test, which provides inflated numbers. But who drives 450 miles non stop? It's probably attainable in mixed driving. That's not a highway only range number.

I just don’t think it’s “right” to sell a car as a 450-mile EV and it’s (seemingly) impossible to ever do that. (I mentioned in my original post the EPA range isn’t a 70-MPH test)

Conversely, the Escalade IQ is Cadillac-rated 465 miles, yet it’ll do OVER 600 miles at 60 MPH. And over 480 miles at 70-MPH. That’s how it should be done.

I have nothing against Lucid or the Gravity. I think I even have Lucid stock. But this 450-mile number to me smells like a struggling company trying to have a shocking range number to get sales on a crucial product.

To my knowledge, Porsche is the only one that has done this and it was done with the Taycan when it originally released. Most other manufacturers seem to use the two-cycle EPA test, except Tesla, Rivian, Audi, and Lucid use the five-cycle test.

Many vehicles, both ICE and EV, don't hit their EPA rated range unless driven in a manner calibrated to do so. The test doesn't adequately account for normal driver behavior. Thankfully, these days we have the Internet, where anyone that cares can find out what range they should expect in the real world. Hopefully people dropping $100,000+ on a vehicle can spend 20 minutes watching some reviews or reading summaries. That 450-mile range estimate is based on mixed driving. In the highway tests I've seen the Gravity is close to its EPA highway rating.

Conversely, the Escalade IQ is Cadillac-rated 465 miles, yet it’ll do OVER 600 miles at 60 MPH. And over 480 miles at 70-MPH. That’s how it should be done.
Unfortunately, the EPA permits manufacturers to utilize a test that doesn't reflect real-world results. The Cadillac's range is indeed excellent, but it comes at a the cost of a monster battery and massive weight penalty. A vehicle like the Ioniq 6 could probably beat the Cadillac over a long distance simply by virtue of being far more efficient. The Gravity may be able to do the same. Lucid is trying to do things differently by focusing on efficiency. I'm actually interested in a Denali XL version of the iQ so I can tow my camper. Hurray for consumer choice!

Lucid is definitely struggling...but all vehicle manufacturers are struggling with EV sales. Lucid is just the latest one to the party. Edmunds got 400 miles in its testing, which is in line with how off the Air was from EPA during its testing at ~10%. I don't think there's anything nefarious going on here. Lucid used the five-cycle because it provides the best numbers from a marketing perspective. The majority of owners will never test the real range of the vehicle because 400 miles is like 6+ hours of driving. Those of us with normal sized bladders need a break. The range shortfall is more likely to come up in the context of cold weather. I don't think anyone buying this vehicle will go into the purchase unaware that the real-world range may be less than advertised.

Companies don't get to assign themselves an EPA number and are subject to investigation and or testing at any time and can be fined up the wazoo if they lie to the EPA.

I do understand your position though.

I never had an Ice car that came anywhere close to its number on the Munrony sticker, and it was just a given that the cycle tests weren't representative of reality, no one bats an eye. Right off the bat they use real unadulterated gas without ethanol which isnt even possible to find in lots of places.

Im curious how you feel about charging claims?

Do you feel that GM and or others should put an "*" on their recharge time claims due to the HVAC conflict these cars exhibit where simply running HVAC during charging can totally collapse the the recharge rate?

The UTAC ratings in France back in the 80s allowed for some "creativity".

Peugeot tested their then new 605 (the 2L model) with, among other things, 20oz of engine oil in total (something about windage losses), the smallest tires the base model was homologated with, inflated to north of 60psi, on a test that was a few miles in simulated conditions.
Needless to say it advertised funky mpg numbers.

Disagree with that, came from an older Lincoln Navigator with the 5.4 3v that got 14.5 at best around town, towards the end of my run with that vehicle more like 13.2. 17.5 tops on the highway doing 70-75. The Lightning is much much cheaper to run, even with the higher cost of superchargers, and charged at home, it's not even close.

That said my power is cheap, .10-.11 per kwh at home, so there is that.

My power works out to ~0.19/kwh, and not likely to go down soon. Also my cars average about 30mpg, so it doesn't really pencil out here for me. An older Model S with free supercharging would be an option, but my nearest super charger is a half hour away, which I could charge at maybe 1/3 of the time on my travels.
If my car budget was $40-50k then something like a plug-in hybrid makes some sense, but I'm not spending that when the $5-15k vehicle has much lower overall costs.

Well, under ideal conditions and everything was 100% efficient, and you don't mind shortening the battery life by running it from 100 to 5%, it does seem fairly practical.
But the efficiency loss from the house electricity meter to the the top 10% of the battery capacity must get pretty high, and in general chargers and batteries are only 85-90% efficient. Then when its -15C every night for 3 weeks, it takes some serious kwh to keep a battery warm enough not to just lose half its charge just sitting there. It might burn $1-2 in electricity per day for a 1/3 of the year just keeping the battery warm?
So I would guess over a year, with a couple months where daytime battery cooling could be needed, using real winter tires, charging efficiency loses, needing the car to heat the battery almost every night for 5-6 months of the year and heat it all day for 4-5 months, and the winter range loss, the real cost of "fuel" per mile of driving might get very close to the same as a 30-35mpg gas car.
Then the car needs to be plugged in for most of the winter nights, and planning trips and motels where charging is available, and fast charging fees possibly being very high, it becomes a bit of chore and possibly quite a bit more expensive.
I'm not opposed to an EV, but I don't want to pay much more for it, and then have another factor to manage the family activities around. I'm sure when I'm retired and the kids are out of the house, the EV batteries and cars will have better cost to utility value, at least one of our cars will be an EV. Right now it would have to be the 3rd car which certainly doesn't save me any money then.
