Lucas UCL Useless now?

Hi,

Here in Australia I use BP Ultimate 98 RON petrol, which is pretty much the best petrol you can buy. I came across this article stating it has its own UCL in the petrol (interesting statements in the last paragraph). I normally add Lucas UCL to the mix, but after reading this, am I just wasting my time? Also referring to the 'friction modification', does it really make any difference at all?

From what I read in that advertisement, it sounds like you are. To my understanding, what they've described is exactly what Lucas UCL is supposed to do.

You have a beautiful city, Leo. I was down there in Dec. 95/Jan. 96. I don't remember the name of the area where my friend and I were staying, but it was right on the water, where you could see the dolphins swim past in the morning. I also went wine tasting in several of the vineyards in the area. Outstanding. I'd love to visit again.

supposedly the lucas causes the mixture to burn hotter, getting more complete combustion. I have to say that I believe I have felt this via seat of my pants determinations, in my BMW and my chevy truck. I must note though that no difference was ever felt in our plymouth car, acura (honda) car, or toyota van.

Never noticed any MPG change in any vehicle except the acura.

As far as UCL propperties, I dont think you want too much of that sort of additive, so you may want to significantly cut back the lucas adding (what rate do you add at?), or stop all together.

This is an interesting clip....almost reinforcing the same conclusion that I'm coming up with....just use Premium fuel and skip all the fuel addatives altogether...

You will get more CC deposits with high test fuels. Its best to stick with the octane rating that most vehicles require, 87 octane, regular gas.

Leo - Ultimate 98 has been reformulated and is better than when initially released. I use it now instead of Optimax 98. Ultimate has a bunch of cleaning stuff in it, I had a chat to BP tech line.

Octane ratings in the US are different from overseas. We use an average, they use a single test. Their octanes are higher for equivalent fuels.

The guys in the USA etc use (RON + MON)/2 method to determine octane.

Anyways thanks for your input. I'll cut down the dose of the Lucas to half the recommended dose until it runs out and wont use it again. Might just go to using maintainance dose of Redline SI-1 to slowly clean the intake valves (as the stuff in the fuel is too low conc).

Also I thought it was interesting this 'friction modifier' in the fuel will replenish the oils FMs? Sounds like a bunch of bull to me...

PS Matt_S, Yeah Adelaide is a pretty nice place. Good to study in anyway! Sounds like you were at an adjacent town of Victor Harbour, very nice down there...
