I make trips to Texas from Minnesota every couple months. Just straight drive, no stops except few minutes for gas. Made another one last week. While coming back, I noticed my engine make noise like its running without lubrication. something like "cud cud cud....". When I noticed this i was around straight 800 miles from Texas. So, I wonder, does oil breaks down temporarily under high heat? If this is the case, does engine gets any damage? my camry runs just great with 155000 miles though. I have been using M1 for a long time and from last year I started using Amsoil.

So did you drive the remaining 800 miles with it going "cud, cud, cud?" Or did you correct it? How? Was it low on oil? Simple fix is to stop and add oil as necessary. Was the oil level fine, then what grade and type oil were you running? Perhaps stepping up to a slightly thicker oil or a synthetic would help. Can't really know, though, without more info.

Again, if this car runs 5w20 I would move to 10w30 maybe. Or if that is not the issue, maybe move from dino to blend or blend to synthetic. Perhaps there is some crud that got caught in an oil passage and temporarily and caused the cud, cud, cud noise.

Well, Oil is Amsoil 5W30(synthetic) for winter in MN otherwise 10W30. and it had only 1000 miles on it, so I don't think it was breaking down at 2800 miles. Anyhoo, Lucas is really thick.

We are having to assume alot here. Ever check you oil when filling up? Did this noise happen after switching to Amsoil? Would be pretty obvious what to do, in that case.

800 miles weren't remaining, after 800 miles drive I noticed this noise. I checked oil weather it was low on oil or not, And found out that it wasn't low on oil at all. So, I went ahead and bought a bottle of lucas oil stabilizer and poured in about one fourth of it. the noise went away, got back home and changed oil as I change it after every four thousand miles anyways. And car runs smooth as usual.

Note that he is using Amsoil 5w30 and changing every 4,000 miles. How could there be any crud in his engine?

Perchance it was abused (previous owner maybe?) in its earlier days prior to the good Amsoil stuff?

Stay out of the left lane doing 90 MPH with it for a prolonged period.... especially in climate heat.

You seemed to stumble with your words a bit describing your oil-checking. Some dipsticks are misleading. Put in the exact amount of oil that your owners manual dictates. That may not be the correct reading mark on your dipstick... not 100% of vehicle dipsticks read properly.

Also... it sounds like you "may" have been either been filling the crankcase too low.... or possibly too high. Need even-more info now.

The oil heats up, you start getting vapors through the PCV, those get sucked into the engine and can cause detonation.

i don't do 90/mph but i got your point as i drive 75 to 80/mph for long period. and no i don't fill low or over fill my crank case. I do fill exact four quarts with filter change as specified in owners manual. However someone said about previous owner and things. I own this car since it had 17000 miles on it. i drove it for more 3000 miles and at 20000 miles i started using mobile 1 synthetic till 130000 miles. Last year i switched to amsoil. changed timing belt when it had 90000 miles on it. regularly changed spark plugs and wires. regularly cleaned intake valve. regularly changed air filter and fuel filter.regularly changed transmission oil (amsoil ATF all the time). car runs smooth after the oil change though

"...I noticed my engine made noise like its running without lubrication..."cud cud cud"...when I noticed this I was around 800 miles from Texas."

There's only one likely conclusion: Your Minnesota car is afraid of Texas.

My explaination is you have been driving too much. I notice that if I drive one of my vehicles for a long period of time that I tune into the noise they make. More so than if you drive them on and off. After driving for a while I tune into the specific noise a vehicle makes and then start to worry about small problems that could happen especially if your driving through BFE. Has happened to me many times. Usually the wife says its nothing and turns up the tunes. Then at the end of the run I get under the truck and look things over and find no problems. If you drive your vehicle alot you know these things show up on trips. But if you only make short trips you may not be familiar with some of the sound your ride makes.

P.S. I have spent lots of time agongizing over these small noises and have never been stranded in the past. Doesn't mean you shouldn't keep your ears pealed though!
