Been calling around checking prices on a fluid/filter change on my 2002 Silverado & one place said they add Lube-Guard to all transmission services...what is that? Do I need it?

The regular "red" ATF additive not a bad juice. Find their website and read about it. With a good fluid, you don't "need" it but it can help a conventional ATF.

Not to be confused with the LubeGard conversion fluid which you defintely don't need.

I'll give a thumbs up for lubeguard red. Keeps my 2000 Olds Intrigue with 172,000 mi. (original tranny) shifting much smoother
than with out.

Most trans shops used one bulk fluid at one time. The LG modified the Dex II or III to function as 7176. Now I'm sure they use a universal fluid ..but probably aren't breaking the habit of adding the red bottle.

I had my transmission flushed at the dealer a couple of years ago and was suprised/impressed to see they actually pulled 16 quarts of Motorcraft MerconV off the shelf and dumped them one by one into the pump to flush it. They also added a bottle of Lubeguard Red. I ran the fluid for 35,000 miles and it still looked bright and red when i flushed it the second time.

Second time was at a non-dealer location that used bulk Shell fluid and lubeguard red (at my request).

LubeGuard, and similar products were introduced as a replacement for whale sperm(no joke).
Good quality fluids require no additives

Think about how the whale felt.

Well he felt he was coming, but in reality he was going.

A good quality ATF doesn't need any additives.

Lubegard is an excellent ATF additive.

If their bulk fluid REQUIRES Lubegard, maybe you should find another shop. Or, buy your own ATF, bring it with you, watch them load the flush machine, and watch them flush your vehicle with it.

For your vehicle, ANY synthetic Dex/Merc, ANY DexronVI, and ANY MerconV would work perfectly WITHOUT any additives.
