This one particular lab found Royal Purple SN, Synpower SN, M1 SN, M1 EP SN to all have a starting Tbn of 7-8.

The Castrol Edge is using the mg/ca combination but has a Tbn of 10.1.

They also erroneously claimed that RP SN oils have Synerlec, which is not the case. In any event, TBN retention is the real issue, and none of the TBNs they post for the PCMOs are alarmingly low.

Thanks for the great link! It should almost become a sticky, with the information there.

Interesting info, bad comments...as usual. The site that is.

Lower starting TBN for Mobil1 EP than most API SN oils? ...sure. Most API SN are right there, the issue is retention. How many daily drivers are out there running racing engine oils on the streets either?

Thanks for the link. Interesting info.

I'm suprised that with how much Ca and Na the new RP has, that it's TBN is that low.

Also suprised the SN RP has no moly at all.

They replaced the moly with extra acidic purple dye, which also lowers the TBN.

According to the M1 site the starting TBN for M1 0-20 SN is 8.8.

It is important to remember that most labs use the D4739 protocol for TBN analysis, which gives a reading 2-3 lower than the D2896 protocol, only used for new oil.
Example: a VOA sample of Delvac 1 LE 5W30 came out at 9.6, even though the mfg says it is 12.6. Another example: VOA of Delvac 1 SHC 5W40 was 14.0, even though Mobil says it is 16.0.
An "apples and oranges" situation!
