I was trying to scan a Mini this past weekend. I was surprised there was zero Mini or BMW specific file on my Xtool A30 Pro, so I downloaded both.

It also wanted to do some sort of Android OS update, which I did.

Afterward I was still having trouble getting into the Mini side, even though it showed on my screen now and claimed 100% download. I rebooted several times and it rebooted fine, but I never could get the Mini specific diag to open. Finally I had to give up -- was just trying to help a friend at church -- and powered it down.

I powered up once back at home and figured I'd try to get this squared away. It only boots up to a white screen, and will do nothing more regardless of charging, fully charged, unplugged, whatever. The screen just stays solid white.

I tried holding each button when powering on, wondering if maybe there was a safe mode. No joy.

Now, granted, I bought the unit Nov '21 and it's out of warranty. Xtool was extra enthusiastic to point out the warranty situation, and said it appeared to be a hardware issue even though I think we can assume this is software based upon history of actions pre-failure.

Xtool basically told me to go pound sand. I now see the A30 Pro is no longer available, and the conspiracy theorist in me wonders if Xtool wants to brick these to get them out of the market and no longer have to worry about supporting the free LT updates. I know this is unlikely and I'm paranoid.

This was only ~$230 so I understand it was never a high end tool.

Really I'm just disappointed because it was a handy scanner and it feels like needless waste when an update bricked it.

Still, it's difficult to not be soured on Xtool -- at least for awhile. I've got an Otofix on order, but I don't have any delusions that their support will necessarily be any better.

In the round filing bin it goes:

I bought an Altel scan tool a few years ago to re-program my ignition switch on my Honda. Been absolutely flawless since, but I think they make their money on the software updates instead. Yearly updates are not insignificant in price. But its been too handy to not update.

This is one reason why I never updated my old handheld scanner. No real benefit except I have to pick global OBD if it's never then 2008. it's not like the one very old at this point update is going to give me anything good like OLM reset, key programming, or electronic parking brake maintenance mode.

I keep a laptop with ISTA+/P/D it does Mini also. The Otofix does work for a lot of the things.

I guess my other reason for posting was to say that if you think you own a scanner that is no longer sold, consider resisting system updates if possible. This is assuming one prescribes to the conspiracy theorist mindset such as myself.
reminds me of the old saying "If it ain't broke.. don't fix it".. I don't think you're making up theories. Iit's ok to have those theories.. because.. you can be both.. being paranoid and yes they are out to get you!
