i started driving in 1965, i have owned engines that are low power 150 hp, engines high power 550 hp and most in between. but every one had way less power at low end than i thought it should. to me some of the newer cars are about where there low end should be, ie my son bought a kia that has very good low end. what think?

They probably don't have any more low-end than previous engines...likely less...

But - what they do have is drive by wire programming that opens the throttle more agressively than the amount of pedal movement so that it "feels" more powerful...

Modern fuel injection and ignition, as well as advanced new Cam profiles give a board power band?

i think the the kia is NOT turbocharged. my service wrighter said the kia wont last a long time. he said dont keep it more than 3-4 years.

Better yet, avoid dealers altogether.

This. The 4.0L has only 190 hp but has plenty of low end. I can spin the tires just giving mine half throttle at a light. I can also lug it up hills in OD at 1200 RPM.

I drove a jeep that had a 4.6L Stroker motor, basically a 4.0L that was bored and stroked to 4.6L. That motor had an amazing amount of low end. The amazing thing is that even though it was bored out, the higher low end increased mpg. Stock the Cherokee gets 15 city and 20 mpg highway. With a stroked motor I've seen people get 23-24 highway in a stock jeep.

I think some newer cars have good low end, but a lot of it is in the gearing. Most new cars are all about horsepower, and you don't get horsepower until the higher end of the RPM range. Most people don't rev their engines to max power when accelerating from a stop light in the city.
