Twice this week the Escort's "Low Coolant" light came on. Both times I checked there was plenty of coolant left in the reservoir tank. This happened once when I flushed the coolant so I am 95% sure it is simply just a sensor going bad on me. Are these things cheap?

They shouldn't be more than 10-20 bucks for a 'Scort. They sometimes go bad, with age. Either replace it or unplug the sensor and keep an eye on the coolant level periodically..

I might just buy a sensor. I would unplug it but the lady drives the car most of the time so I would be more comfortable knowing it works -- I tell her to always look at her engine temp from time to time and I know she doesn't, lol.

I know that a with a lot of fords, the sensor comes as a the bottle assy. We used to replaced the Taurus ones all the time. I want to say it was about 70-90

I think if it's that much I'll leave it unplugged. The previous owner had all records of this car and one service receipt was for the "check coolant" light coming on. The dealer said they found no leaks and coolant level was fine... so I assume this sensor is just going out for good.

If it costs that much, then you might want to try smacking the overflow bottle a few times to unstick the sensor. I think they are just a float switch..

Check AZ and Advance for a switch. Theres got to be an aftermarket part that costs less...

My 528es have LLCSs. I consider it a very useful sensor. In an engine with a dinky cooling system and an aluminum head, running low on coolant can trash a motor fast.

Contour's had this problem, and the fix was to run an extra 1" of coolant in the bottle.

So you might try "overfilling" by about 1" and see what happens before you unplug or replace anything.

If the reservoir bottle can be removed, you could thoroughly clean it and that might free balky float sensor.
